hi there
i downloaded service pack 2 a week ago and started having
a conflict with my norton anti virus so i decided to
restore my computer to a previous point . The thing is I
can't even restore it back! i tried 3 different restore
points and was told i failed, no change has been done to
my computer.
I really hope i won't have to reintall windows from
scratch.pls tell me there is another way to do that??
regards

There may be corrupted data in system Restore.
Turn off/on System Restore to delete corrupted files:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.
Click System Restore Settings on left side.
Check "Turn off System Restore", click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
This deletes ALL Restore Points including corruption.
Then go back and turn on system Restore and create a Restore Point.
Otherwise:

And how will doing this get him back to a time before he was having trouble?

Seems like if you do the above that you have lost any chance of getting
back. If I were you I'd seek out more information before following the
above.

What Version of Norton's Anti Virus are you using?
There's a patch available for NAV2004 through live update and if you're not
using NAV2004, have you tried the Norton's site for updates that are not
available through live update?
Just a thought

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2

Bud;
It won't, but whatever the solution, System Restore is not an option.

However the next step is to uninstall Norton reboot then install
Norton.
Uninstalling the Service Pack should not always be the first step as
so many seem to think.

To add a little to my last post...
Was Norton disabled during SP-2 installation?
What version of Norton?
What exactly is happening?

You may need to uninstall Norton, reboot then reinstall Norton.

tks for ur hel
I am using norton antivirus 2003 and my subscription
expires in 2005 so I am pretty sure it is still
active.Norton wasn't disabled during SP-2 installation.
After installation of SP 2 I a little red shield on the
lower right corner started apperaing and if i click on it
a warning window opens telling me that the status of my
security is unknow. Microsoft told me there was a
conflict for the moment with norton and sp2 so I decided
to restore my computer back to b4 the sp2 , but i
can't....hope this will help
regards

The Norton issue can be over come by going to the new Security icon in the
control panel and click on the antivirus line. Then say you will monitor
your antivirus status yourself. That will take the red shield out of the
tray. Norton does not plan to support XP SP2 with any version earlier that
2004. Version 2003 will still work, but XP cannot monitor its update
status.
I think Norton just wants to sell a lot of version 2004 which is a real drag
on the system. When your subscription runs out on Norton, go to
www.grisoft.com and look at their AVG 7 Pro. It is an excellent antivirus
program, less of a drag on the system and cost only $33 for a two year
license.

That is not a conflict.
That just means SP-2 can not monitor NAV 2003 at this time since
Norton has not made the appropriate available.
Norton does not plan to update versions older than 2004.

Double click the shield and open the Security Center.
Click "
Change the way..." on the left side.
Uncheck appropriate box and click OK.

You will lose no functionality of NAV, the only thing lost is the
ability for the Security Center to monitor.
Prior to SP-2 this was not an option anyways.

SP-2 has played havoc with my computer. HP tells me I should have updated
their applications BEFORE I installed SP-2 ... their system restore (and
several other applications) will not work otherwise... now I must uninstall
SP-2 but have learned there may be issues doing that as well...
Sigh.
