help - SFM network issue?

Hi All --

Well, I am kinda at the end of my rope here... I have
just setup a new Win2k server on a re-deployed Dell Power
Edge 2300. The system is config'd as follows:

Dell PowerEdge 2300
1 x 500 MHZ PIII
1 GB RAM
3 x 18 GB drives on the included PERC2 RAID for the OS
4 x 250 GB SATA drives on new Promise SATA RAID for file
sharing.

The system acts as a DC for our network (AD is pretty
small as we are only ~300 users.)
The system is then only used for filesharing -
specifically for Mac's (8 G4 Quicksilvers) in our design
dept. The only share on the system is a Mac file share on
the Promise RAID array. (i.e. F:\macVolume\ is shared
as 'macVolume').

Not sure if it can get any more vanilla.

My problem is this - we have great file transfer speed
when copying data to the server. Copying files down to a
desktop however is REALLY BAD if it copies at all. It
could take up to an hour to copy a 64 KB file from the
server to a Mac desktop. (all Mac's have the MS UAM for
OS X and are talking on AFP). Oddly enough - if I connect
with my WinXP workstation to an ADMIN$ share or
something, I can copy files back and forth w/o any
trouble.

So here is what I have done...

Swapped out netowrk cables on the clients and the servers.
Swapped ports on switches.
Swapped switches.
Tried using SMB from a Mac
Tried trasferring files to/from a share not on the
Promise array.
Disabled antivirus software (Trend Micro Server Protect)

Really it seems like everything I do I still have the
same trouble. Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks in advance...

David

Sounds like you have done quite a bit of troubleshooting. Your note that
smb and afp connections lead me to believe this problem may be client
related as these are different code paths on the server. One idea that
could help if you have Appletalk installed try afp:/at/server.
