Help!! Reading CD-R/RWs

This question may have been answered before but I cannot find any ref to it.
I have a Hi-Grade Notino laptop with Microsoft XP installed. Recently my CD
drive has refused to see files on DVD CD-RW cds. My Cd drive is a
slimtype COMBO LSC-24081. The drive is visible and I can work with
CD-Rs with no problem. I have downloaded Windows Service pack 2 and searched
the on-line Help centre for assistance but to no avail. I have discussed this
with friends who think I may be having a session(?) problem and that my
computer still thinks another CD is still running. But they have no idea how
to resolve this. I have reformatted my hard drive hoping this would cure the
problem but it hasn't. Now I can't even install my printer drivers or
applications. What advice can you great wise people out there think? I need
this system back up and running asap. Cheers.

What burning software do you use? Has it been updated lately?
As a last resort a firmware update may be needed for the CD combo drive..
Get this tool to id your firmware ver and id string for the drive.

Thanks Jaymon for your quick reply. I downloaded NeoInfotool as suggested. It
confirmed that my CD ROM is being recognized and is able to read DVDs, CD-Rs
and CD-RWs, along with others. However this still does not let me read files
that I know are on the disk or load new applications. I don't know if I
havn't turned something on, or off, what else can I do? Do I need to do
something else with NeoInfotool? I don't want to reformat again as I have
done this a few times and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Hi,
Dave, I need to know the burning app you use, it most likely needs to be
updated.. I also need the id string for the drive and the firmware ver#. Or,
you can search them on the net yourself. It may be even better if you can
access the OEM (Hi-Grade) site for your laptop and obtain a firmware update
for your (Slimtype Combo LSC-24081) drive. I could not find that their site
had an update for that model drive, though I am not a registered customer and
did not login. You may be able to as their customer login and access their
customer support and it varies by country of origin too.
Or search the appropriate site with your laptops model #

CD-RW disks are always problematic when used in a different computer
than they were written on. I avoid using them at all times. CD-R
disks are cheaper than dirt and the miniscule savings from usings
CD-RW disks are not worth the extra hs&h that is often involved.

If the drive previously worked okay with these disks and has recently
refused to do so then there may be a registry problem with the entries
for this drive, possibly caused by some CD or DVD software
update/uninstall/reinstall.

If you go to the article on CD Burning in XP by the late Alex Nichol
MVP at http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm you will find in the problems
section a link to download a file cdgone.zip which will clean out all
of the CD related entries from your registry. Download the file,
unzip it and merge it into the registry then reboot the computer to
redetect the CD drive(s) and recreate the registry entries for them.
