Hi there,

I am hoping somebody can help me with a problem I am having with my home
network setup here... I've been working on it for 4 days now and I am about
ready to throw in the towel and give up

I will try to provide as much details of the problem as I can:

If you have any suggestions or solutions, please post in the group or to
auggie77777 (at) hotmail (dot) com

Thanks!

Clint

HARDWARE AND EQUIPMENT:
Computers: (2)
Laptop (p3 1.8ghz running Win2k Server)
Bluebox (p4 3ghz running win2k Server)
This computer is hosting websites (IIS) and Kerio email server
Both are on the same workgroup "Spider"
DSL Modem (DLINK)
Hub (Surecom Etherperfect 505ST)
DSL account:
Small Business Server, 2 static IPs

NOTE: There is no firewall, either software or hardware.

SETUP:
DSL modem is plugged into Hub's "cascade" port and each computer (Laptop and
Bluebox) are hooked up to port 1 and port 2 on Hub. Both computers can
access the internet without problems.

PROBLEM:
- I have a business DSL account, it comes with 2 static IPs.
- I hooked the DSL modem to the hub (in the cascade port) and the 2
computers (Laptop and Bluebox) to the hub
- Both Laptop and Bluebox can access the internet without problems
- Neither Laptop or Bluebox can see eachother in "My Network Places"
- Bluebox is hosting websites using IIS. If I enter a domain name (ie:
www.MySampleWebsite.com) for one of these websites on Bluebox, the website
comes up.
- If I enter the domain name for the same website (ie:
www.MySampleWebsite.com) on Laptop, the website does not come up (DNS error)
- If I am on either Laptop or Bluebox and ping the other computer by its
name (Laptop or Bluebox), I get "Unknown host ..."
- If I am on either Laptop or Bluebox and ping the other computer by its IP,
I get "Request timed out."
- If I am on Laptop and ping a website on Bluebox, the domain resolves to
the correct IP, but I get "Request timed out."
- If I am on Laptop and do a TRACERT to Bluebox's IP, I get "Request timed
out." for each hop
- The "Default Gateway" for both Bluebox and Laptop is different (I am not
sure if this is supposed to be same or not)
- The "Subnet Mask" for both Bluebox and Laptop is different (these are
supposed to match, if network is set up properly, aren't they?)

HISTORY AND NOTES:
- A friend had a home network with the Business DSL account (2 static IPs),
made up of Bluebox and his Home computer (same configuration as me... DSL
modem, Hub, 2 computers running Windows 2000 server)
- His network worked fine, he could transfer files between the computers,
see websites hosted on Bluebox from his Home computer, check email from
Bluebox, etc.
- I had a home network with the Residential DSL account (2 dynamic IPs),
made up of Laptop and my Home computer.
- My network worked fine, I could transfer files between the computers, both
could use the internet, etc (neither computer hosted websites except for
development and in that case "LOCALHOST" was used)
- Friend is going out of town for a few months, so we moved the server
(Bluebox) over to my place. I upgraded from Residential to Business DSL and
so I have 2 static IPs
- When we moved the server to my place, I unhooked my Home computer and
plugged the network cable into the server (Bluebox)
- We changed all the DNS settings so they point to the new static IP Bluebox
has, this works fine.
- Bluebox was on a workgroup called "Spider". Laptop was on a workgroup
called "SWM". I changed Laptop's network identification so it was on the
"Spider" workgroup.

TCP/IP Settings in "Network and Dial Up Connections" for "Local Area
Connection"
- If I right click "Local Area Connection" and select PROPERTIES I see (this
applies to both Bluebox and Laptop)
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- If I select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click PROPERTIES, I see:
- GENERAL tab:
Both "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address
automatically" are selected. (this is for both computers)
- If I click on the ADVANCED button, I see:
- IP SETTINGS tab:
IP addresses: in the white box below it, it says "DHCP Enabled" (this is
for both computers)
Interface Metric: in the white box next to it, there is a "1" (this is for
both computers)
- DNS tab:
"DNS server addresses, in order of use" is empty, the ADD button is usable
Selected are: "Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" (radio
button), and "Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix" (checkbox)
(this is for both computers)
At the bottom of the page, "Register this connection's addresses in DNS"
is selected (this is for both computers)
- on the WINS tab: "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" is selected, as is "Enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP" (this is for both computers)
- On the OPTIONS tab: if I select "TCP/IP filtering" and click PROPERTIES
both computers have the same: "enable tcp/ip filtering (all adapters) is not
selected, and all options are set to PERMIT ALL

Auggie-

For starters- the difference in netmask and gateway is a
huge red flag right off the bat. They should be the same
if your 2 static IP's are on the same network. I am
confident that if you get those squared away you'll be on
your way.

Good Luck,

Louie

I wasn't sure about the gateway, but was pretty sure that subnet mask had to
match on the computers...

But thats where I am being stumped... I've been tinkering for a few days now
and gotten nowhere.

Programming is more my thing, not networking... so I've been following a few
websites for how to get things set up here... and at this point pretty much
every site out there seems to say "If you enter IPCONFIG and the Subnet Mask
doesn't match up, then its your firewall". Except I don't have a
firewall... so hence why I've given up tinkering on it myself and turned to
the newsgroup for help
