Help ! Opening files defaults to "Search Companion"

Everytime I try and look at my files thru start - I am forced into "search
companion". Why and what can I do to fix my computer into opening w/o
search. And one more thing please why does START MENU sometimes black out or
block out all my shortcuts. I don't seem to be able to find the answer.
Appreciate any help you can give.

For the first problem, try MVP Doug Knox's fix:

As for the second question, I'm not really clear on the problem. You
might want to go to MVP Kelly Theriot's site here:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Click on "S" and scroll down to the Start Menu section and see if that
helps.
