If you save the attachment to your hard drive and double click on it, does
the same thing happen?

Saving to hard drive is not a problem, becuase then I can open MS Word the
normal way. The problem is only opening Word through a file that is sent via
attachment. Thanks for your help.

'because then I can open MS Word the normal way'.

You mean if you double click on it, it works?
Or you can open word, go to File - Open and open the file you just saved?

Here are steps I take:
1. Within the MS Outlook program. I get an email with an attachment,
normally they are MS Word attachemnts but could be other format.
2. I open dialogue box that says: "Opening mail attachment."
3. Double clik on open. (This should open file).
4. Instead it opens Windows Media Player.

I think that it is a problem with in the program, not due to steps I am
taking. I can file save the file and oepn it, but that takes extra steps.

Lou,

I hate to be rude, but... That completely ignores my question, so let me
ask again.

When you save it to the desktop and you *ARE* able to open it, are you
opening it by double clicking on it, or by going to File - Open within word?

Also, to follow up on that:

You said attachments could be other formats. Do all formats open in WMP, or
just word documents?

Oh, one other question: What version of Office are we dealing with?

Sorry!
Saving to the desktop I can NOT open file by double clicking on the file.
Actually, it opens the media player again. I have to go into Word and open
from there.

Forget about other programs, my error. I tried an excel attachment and it
opens fine!!

I am using MS Professional Edition 2003.

Ok.

Easy to fix.

Right click on the file that is on the desktop.
Click properties.
Where it says Opens with: Click Change and select Microsoft Word from the
list (since it is likely to be there) and make sure Always use.. is checked.
