Opening attachments

When I open email attachments a popup window appears labeled "Opening Mail
Attachment" and has the options to "open", "save" and "cancel". There is a
check mark in the box "Always ask before opening this type of file" but I am
unable to uncheck the box.

How do I stop this window from appearing?

Sounds like you are running either Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
Right click on the Outlook shortcut in the Start Menu and choose Run as
Administrator. Make the change and then start Outlook normally again.
