help on windows2003 setup

D

david

I installed winxppro on a compaq deskpro en. No problem.
I then rebooted machine with a win2003server cd in cd
holder and started to install win2003 on same partition
as xp but in a seperate directory. The first problem I
run into is a message stating 'cannot verify drive c:'. I
press enter and setup continues. The next problem is when
setup copies files from cd to hardrive, I get 'was not
able to copy vga.sys'. I press enter to retry and copying
contiues. This happens for about fifteen different files.
The only file it can't copy even when I press enter to
retry several times is 'driver.cab'. When setup reboots
and tries to contiue with setup, I get a stop:0x000000713
error message.

Suggestions have been to diable cpu cache, etc.

Does anyone know what is going on? Help

Hi David,
Usually in my experience an issue like this turns out to be caused by a
smudged or scratched CD. Check the data-side surface of the CD for
fingerprints, smudges, scratches, etc. If smudges are found, clean the CD
with a CD-cleaning kit; if scratches are found, resurface the CD
(resurfacing kits are available at most computer stores, and most PC-repair
shops will do the resurfacing for you at a very reasonable price).

It's not the best idea to install two OSes on one partition. The suggested
way to set up a dual-boot system is to install each OS on its own separate
partition, starting with installation of the oldest OS (in this case, XP),
then installing the newer one last (so that the boot files are updated to
the latest version, required by the newer OS).

The symptoms you're describing, if not caused by a "bad" CD, could be caused
by bad blocks on the hard disk, faulty RAM or processor, or other failing
hardware components. Try running thorough hardware diagnostics on the
machine. Since the XP installation went well, it's more likely (in my
opinion) bad blocks on the hard disk.
