Hi,

I just bought a External USB 2.0 Harddrive and USB 2.0 Combo slim combo
drive but I can't get them to work on my laptop. Both usb devices are both
fine using my desktop pc (works on both usb1.0 & usb2.0 ports).

To my eagerness to get it working on my laptop, i bought a usb2.0 cardbus
but its giving the same problem as the usb1.0

The USB Harddrive keeps on flashing red when plugged-in and doen't create
additional drive on My Computer (usually drive E).

The Combo drive keeps flashing green and have to leave it for approx 10
minutes to register on my computer but it will not eject.

Please help, this is driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance,

Garry

Laptops may not have full functioning powered USB ports,
read your specs.

Thanks for the hint. If that's the case, is there anything I can do on
WinXP settings to get full functioning USB power?

Regards,

Garry

It is hardware, only fix is a new hardware configuration.
You can look for a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card with full power or
buy a new laptop. If it is just a big backup you want, try
one of the 8 GB CF cards and a card reader.

Regards,

The possibility that your HDD when connected to your laptop is not receiving
suficient power is a probability as suggested by others. Two questions:
does your external HDD have and external power supply or the provision for
one, does your USB buscard have the provision for an external power supply?
It is common for buscards to have provision for external power (5vdc) that
is often supplied from a USB port. The cable to connect a USB port to the
card is readily available and is often supplied with the card. With respect
to the external enclosure, if it is a full size HDD (3.5") it definately
requires an external power supply and should have been supplied with a 5VDC
PSU. If it is a laptop drive (2.5") it usually won't have an external
supply in which case it needs to be powered via the buscard as discussed
earlier.
