Help!!! On Reinstalling or Repairing Windows XP MCE 2006

R

Robert

I have a custom built Sony Desktop Computer with Windows XP MCE 6 for an
operating system. All MS updates have been installed as of Jan. 18, 2008. I
inadvertently installed an internet booster program called Artera Turbo Ver.
3.0 (dated 2003 which I missed since my computer was built in late 2005.
Meaning, when it installed some drivers, it must have corrupted or replaced
the newer drivers Sony installed.) and it changed some of my drivers. As of
this moment, my computer is running extremely slow (for a 3 MB Processor with
2 Gig of Ram and a 320 G hard drive) and appears to be unstable. My Sony
has recovery system software on my hard drive and I've made 2 Recovery DVD's.
I've spent 2 days trying different fixes including System Restore but to no
avail.

Does anyone out there know if I can somehow re-install Windows XP MCE
without having to reformat My C: drive? Or if I can find a site to go to
that gives me instructions on how to repair my OS? Clearly, I can back up my
files (And most are already backed up) but I'm wondering if there's a
relatively uncomplicated solution.

NOTE: I've looked at my Event Viewer and seen the error messages but,
unfortunately I have no idea of what i'm reading or how to fix them.

As an American living in Cali, Colombia, $4.00 a minute calling the US from
Colombia and also paying for live support from Microsoft or Sony isn't
feasible.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do I need to provide more information.
Rebooting my computer takes forever so maybe the problem in part, lies
there. Once I get to my desktop, opening any programs is painfully slow.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

If you know which drivers, there is a 'roll back driver' feature in the
device manager Properties of the devices.

R

Robert

Thanks Mark. I've checked all of the drivers in device manager and there
doesn't seem to be any problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea which one's
were changed.

Many thanks for your input.

Thanks DL. You're right, if I knew how to copy or save them, I would have
included the info from Event Viewer. The problems seem to be in The
Application and the System log.
I have no idea how to copy or save them so you could see them. Any
suggestions?

I had Norton Internet Security 2008 installed and one error message was
CCSVHost which is a Norton file. I've since uninstalled it.

Bottom Line: My sense is that the bootup file is corrupted, the cursor
moves very slow, programs open and close very slow and the internet is almost
like dial up. I have 512 K and for a third world country that's a luxury for
about $100.00. If you want 2 MB, you could make a monthly payment on a BMW
for what it costs down here...Over $600.00 a month with my ISP.

<snipped>

Open Event Viewer.
Double click the event you want to copy.
On the right hand side of the event's properties sheet, you'll see a button that
has two sheets of paper on it. It's right below the arrow buttons.
Clicking on the button will copy the information to your clipboard.
You should now be able to paste that information into a response to DL.

Good luck

Thanks to Nepatsfan I copied the event viewer errors from Jan. 15 to Jan. 17
which is when the problems occurred. I have no idea what to make of them but
maybe you can. There may be a common denominator to these problems but I'm
not experienced enough to recognize them.

One error message I did get that I didn't include was "The exception unknown
software exception (oxc000000d) ocurred in the application at location
0x6b18a27b. After a thorough search on Google and MS Knowledge Base only
came up with 2 references in Japanese but neither had any solution.

DL, I realize this is a big imposition but I'd be grateful for some kind of
solution.

Nepatsfan,

Your instructions Worked like a charm. Many thanks. I fired the event
viewer off to DL.

Try uninstalling Norton and AVG, you may have to use the manual uninstall
procedure detailed on symantec site
(Disconnect your internet if concerned, unless you are connected via nat
router)
If you have other malaware apps, which it appears you may have, uninstall
these also.

Run the system file checker, scanow, see win help for syntax

Robert

Thanks DL,

I did everything you advised and tried to run Scannow. Unfortunately it
asked me for Disk 2 of Windows XP which I don't have since Sony put the OS
system on my hard drive. I checked on this issue in the MS Knowledge base
and they knew about it and suggested I change the registry. No thanks, I'm a
novice at this. I spent 3 hours on the phone with Sony today and their only
solution was to Reinstall. I already knew that so they weren't any help. It
looks like my only recourse is to Reformat and reinstall.

Many thanks again and I appreciate all the time you spent helping me out.
My brother is an executive chef in Boston and if you lived anywhere near
there I'd tell you and your wife/girlfriend to go there for a great meal and
a great bottle of wine.

With appreciation

When you reinstall, before you start loading all your apps & configuring,
you might want to look at all the 'free' apps Sony installs & decide whether
you really want them.
There are many who have problems with Norton, it can be a resource hog, and
there are other less hungry security apps about
Be also aware that some malaware apps, particulary those that are allways
on, can cause conflicts
Personally whilst although I have a couple of malaware apps, I only run them
every month or so, they rarely detect anything other than tracking cookies -
and I have been known to visit places I should'nt :)
Thanks, wrong side of the pond :(

What a great time to use Regedit and try to at least do as suggested in
the Microsoft articles and change the source path to point it to the
location of the files on the hard drive. You have practically nothing
to loose and it may save you from having to do a complete reinstall! If
things go hopelessly bad when you try to edit the registry, well what
the hell, you were going to reformat the drive anyway so nothing lost!
