just upgraded to windows 2000 and DSL. been bombarded by
a non-Internet based popup from Messenger Service. All my
regular blockers are useless. a variety of noxious ads
come through that way along with the ad that if I buy
their software they will keep these kinds of ads from
sneaking thru my windows ports.
the popups are relentless and sometimes won't close.
feels like extortion.

Step 1 - Get a firewall (http://www.zonelabs.com or http://www.sygate.com are
a couple of companies that provide free firewalls. There are plenty more
around.)

Step 2 - Disable the messenger service.
Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK
