HELP: Need program that runs from a floppy to copy a partition (raw data) from a failing Seagate

Hi all,

I have a a Seagate 160 Go that is failing quickly. It is still
recognized by the bios but when I boot to Windows XP from another
master drive it disappears.

Studying the data recovery sites they say that professionals always
copy the drive/partition (raw data) to a working drive, then use the
standard recovery tools to save the data.

The hangup seems to occur when Windows tries to read the
partition/file tables, so I need to find a floppy program that can
copy the raw data from a bad partition to a reliable HD.

I have one NFTS and one FAT32 partition to recover.

I tried Hiren's Boot CD, but all the available recovery programs fail
while reading the file tables.

And I can't get the Bart PE boot CD with DriveImage XML to boot.

So, any suggestions for a program that can run from a floppy (bootable
or under DOS) would be greatly welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys,

I had seen the programs, but didn't know that DiskPatch worked from a
floppy. I got it last night and will try it tomorrow, as it is the
easier solution.

I had found "dd_rescue" and it seemed the ideal program for data
recovery, but it was in Linux. I went to local computer club, but
they didn't have the correct version of Linux installed to compile it.
And it would have been to much of a hassle for just one application.
The bootable CD is the ideal way to go. It mentions "data recovery
software included" without naming the program. Hope it is
"dd_rescue". I'll try to download tonight.

Thanks again,

Tim

Thats normally just because the data structures
have got corrupted so XP decides its unformatted.

That's overstating it with that always claim, tho it is the
best approach if the drive appears to be getting worse.

Correct.

There are some around, none free tho that are any good.

DiskPatch from DIY Data Recovery has the ability to copy a drive using
a floppy for just the reason you are looking for. Here is a link to
there web site: http://www.diydatarecovery.nl/DiskPatch.htm

Good luck.

A Knoppix bootable CD and dd_rescue it comes with for the
drive/partition copy?

Knoppix has dd_rescue, at least every version I used so far had it.
I allways have a few Knoppix CDs around as a "swiss army knive".
And I agree, I found dd_rescue to be very handy for all kinds
of image copy operations incuding on problematic media (which
I have not had too often so far). Also the progress indicator
and speed indicator makes it far superiour to plain 'dd' for
this task.

Hello Arno,

I'm slowly advancing, but the road is long.

I got the Knoppix boot CD (v3.9) from the Knoppix site, but can't
find the dd_rescue in the K menu. Either it's a command line program
or it doesn't come on the base CD.

I've found a couple other sites that have taken the basic Knoppix CD
and incorporated their programs. So that might be the case, here.

If you have a direct link to a version withe dd_rescue it would be of
great help. I'm losing several afternoons, just hunting and trying
dead ends.

What is the complete command line command for launching dd_resue?

How does Linux label hard drives?

I'll either use
primary master for the failing Seagate (is this the hda?)
and secondary master for the new HD to write to (how would
Linux call this drive?)

or
primary master for the failing Seagate
and primary slave for the new HD to write to (how would Linux
call this drive?)

depends on where to put the CD rom.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Hello Folkert,

I got the h2copy, but need to answer a couple of quick questions
before trying it. There is no documentation on the site and since my
German isn't that good, it's difficult to do a Google search.

1) Can this copy specified partitions or sectors? The problem is
that I have a 160 GB drive and need only the last partition = 30 GB.
I'm afraid that the Seagate will heat too much by the time that it
gets to the part I need.

If so, what would the command line be?

2) I believe it says that the destination drive must be a blank
non formatted drive. Is this correct?

3) If my failing Seagate is the primary master and the new HD is
the secondary master, how should the command line read?

H2copy.exe 0 1

Thanks in advance,

Tim

PS DIY Data Recovery hangs trying to read the file table.

Hi Tim,

DiskPatch does not read any 'file tables'.

What can be happeining is that DiskPatch does not even load because FreeDOS
or the UDMA driver can not cope with the bad disk. A Windows 98 diskette to
boot the PC with is the simple solution to that problem.

Should you have already purchased DiskPatch, we can provide you with a
version which offers an improved disk clone feature. If you submit your case
to our online forum we can even provide you with a beta for free to see if
this is able to clone the disk.

Anyway, whatever software you pick for the job, I wish you good luck in
recovering your data.

That is so very user friendly. That must have been thought over very well.
Thank you for testing your apps so very thoroughly.

Gosh, his case is a first. He must be very special.
Why not offer him a free version of your software for offering
his case as a special opportunity for bettering your software.

Hello Folkert,

I got the h2copy, but need to answer a couple of quick questions
before trying it. There is no documentation on the site and since my
German isn't that good, it's difficult to do a Google search.

1) Can this copy specified partitions or sectors?

No, only physical drives.
The problem is that I have a 160 GB drive and need only the last partition = 30 GB.

That's a pity.
I'm not (yet) aware of programs that can *clone* HDs in part by partition
for emergency cloning purposes.

If your problem is FAT related you could try Svend Olaf.
His FindPart is capable of replacing bad parts of FAT with the good ones.
I'm not sure what Svend can do for NTFS.
I'm afraid that the Seagate will heat too much by the time that it
gets to the part I need.

If so, what would the command line be?

There is none.
2) I believe it says that the destination drive must be a blank
non formatted drive. Is this correct?

Yes. So you don't by accident copy to the wrong drive.
3) If my failing Seagate is the primary master and the new HD is
the secondary master, how should the command line read?

H2copy.exe 0 1

Probably. Yes, if that are the only diskdrives.
Thanks in advance,

Tim
