If you don't have any disks then you are bound by whatever recovery routine
the manufacturer of your PC has set. If you don't find it in your
documentation, then check the manufacturer's website or tech support. This
is not an XP function, it is a proprietary routine setup by your system
manufacturer.

Hi,

Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set the system so you can see hidden
and system files (and undo the option to hide file extensions so you can see
what you are doing here).

Locate the \I386 folder on the hard drive (probably under C:\Windows). Find
winnt32.exe and double-click it, this may start the installer for you.
Choose the in-place upgrade to avoid loss of data and user settings. If you
choose a new installation, you may lose access to your existing information.

Well, if he's referring to ASR, Automatic System Recovery, he would have had
to have set that up previously. The other floppies that can be downloaded
are designed to help users install XP on systems that are unable to boot
from a CD, however, the CD is ultimately required. Those same floppies can
be used to get to the Recovery Console but initializing from those floppies
opens Recovery Console with very limited functionality.
