Help!! My system won't boot

hi everyone
recently, i have upgraded my system from windows Me to XP.
it's been working fine for quite a while. however, today i
wasn't able to boot my system. it shows this message up:

The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IFSHLP.SYS
WININIT.EXE: MISSING/UNABLE TO LOAD.

The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g.,
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD)
then here's a C> prompt

whenever i try to enter a DOS command, the same "missing
or corrupted" message pops up again.

what are my options here?
