0\DBLBUFF.SYS missing or currupted! HELP!!

G

Greg Gall

I ran PandaSoftware's ActiveScan yesterday and it detected a virus infecting
the system (my computer runs WinME), which it said was successfully removed
(sorry, I didn't note the virus name or ask it to save the results!). When I
rebooted my computer, I received the following error:
---
The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\DBLBUFF.SYS

The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\IFSHLP.SYS

The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD

Type the name of the Windows loader (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD)
C>
---

The really odd thing that the path specified is "0" drive (not "C:\WINDOWS"
as it should be). I have checked the contents of my computer and the above
files appear to be intact (all in the C:\WINDOWS directory).

I have tried "SYS C:" from the WinME boot disk, however the problem remains.
I have also tried reverting my registry to known-good copy, but that also
didn't help.

How do I recover my computer's system so windows looks in the correct
location for these files?
I can't seem to locate where these file references with folder "0" are...

I am quite desperate so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Greg

Since your system is ME, have you thought of trying a systems restore? Boot
into safe mode and run a restore. Go back 2 or 3 restore point, is possible.

Thanks for the reply!

I tried a "scanreg /restore" on the system, but that didn't work either
(tried the oldest file there), so I guess the problem isn't with the
registry. Is this what you were referring to?

Currently my system won't even boot into safe mode - I can only reach a
command prompt by booting with the WinME emergency startup floppy.

I'm not familiar with win me, but if I remember correctly, it's based on 98.

Have you checked the contents of config.sys and autoexec.bat?

1. boot to DOS.
2. type c:\windows\command\edit.com c:\config.sys
3. insert the following lines

device=c:\windows\dblbuff.sys
device=c:\windows\ifshlp.sys
devive=c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

4. reboot.

Greg,

It appears your problems may have been self-inflected;
Error messages
The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\DBLBUFF.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\IFSHLP.SYS
The following file is missing or corrupted: 0\SYSTEM\VMM32.VXD
Type the name of the Windows loader (i.e. c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd)
C>
Cause
The annoyance is probably related to using software, such as
patch/crack/keygen, that includes malicious codes.

See the following site for more details;

Thanks for the advice,

I tried this, however I still get the same error messages... (i.e. it is
still looking for a 0 folder). It looks like something is overriding this
path...

Thanks Sir_George and Ben Myers!

That was exactly what was wrong with my computer. I had looked through the
MSDOS.SYS file earlier but had not scrolled all the way to the bottom (where
that nasty WinBootDir setting was)!

The file that gave me the virus was a bogus crack program (it didn't
actually open and dialog boxes when executed), so it seems likely that it
also altered the MSDOS.SYS file at the same time. This serves me right for
not being more careful of what I download and execute!

Much appreciated!

Greg
