It sounds like your friend has a copy of Vista Home Premium on his, which
includes the extras you mention.

If you've only just bought it, and it's not what you expected, then you may
be able to take it back to the shop and replace it.

Best to ask him how he did it. He may have pulled a few little tricks to get
them to install.

If you have a Vista DVD, then you can install a 'trial version' of any other
version for 30 days, which may be what he did.

nope he didnt... i was with him when he purchased the laptop and i installed
everything... well its auto install, because all the drivers and system
installer are already on the laptop. so all i had 2 do is press the power
botton and everything got done automatically. and nope its not with trial.
the vista is cuming with the laptop (in the laptop) and all of them are home
basic...

Don't know then, sorry. He just got lucky, by the sound of it.

I have been looking at buying a new laptop and many of them come with Home
Premium.
The ones with Home Basic are usually the NON dual core processors and the
cheaper machines.
Right click My Computer, click Properties, it should tell you the version of
Windows as well as the processor type & amount of RAM on the next screen.

It's a self help group too, didn't see much help offered there either.

I don't have Vista running so can't be specific but the system will set
itself up to make the best use it can of the resources available. This
means that if you have less memory or a slower machine than his the
graphics options may have been set to display less to save resources.
That would explain the taskbar thing I think.

As for media center and other issues I suggest you take both machines to
the store (You said they came from the same place yes?) and ask them. It
will be much easier for them to look and see what's different.

Lets just remember that Vista is not XP first.

The Folder hierarchy is the same as XP or any system but you have much more
to show you where you are in Vista.

Whether you open Explorer or just your Documents folder you will see the
full file window. The first thing to do is hit your ALT key. This opens
reveals the Menu bar. Note that you have back and forward arrows top left.
Next to them is an address type field known as the" Trail"
( previously called "path" by most). This will show you which folders and
files you have open. If you right click the tiny black arrow between the
names in the Trail box the drop down menu shows you want is in that folder.

Just like XP you can of course just double click on the file or folder in
either viewing pane to open them but the Trail will show you at once where
you are.

Click on the Views Menu down arrow to change Icon size. Repeated click on
the Views menu Icon to toggle the different ways of viewing you folders.

Right Click in each of the column headers to chose which columns show.

With Vista it is a new experience. If you are rather tentative about finding
out how it operates by experimentation, get a book from the library or
better still, buy one.
