Hi. 4 nights ago, I lost power while my pc was on. In the morning, i just hit
the power button and restarted it but it got stuck on the log on screen
without the log on button. I did the Repair Windows XP using the WXP cd and I
did the steps this website mentioned.
http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/03_mar/tutorials/cw_boot_toot2.htm

This is the second time I do this - the first time I was successful,
yesterday I wasn't. The Repair was not successful because it will not go back
to my old settings, it won't go back to how it was before the power surge.

I asked on CNet.com what I could do and they suggested that my Last Known
Good Configuration is missing - that I might've accidentaly wiped it out
doing the Repair. And when I hit F8 while the pc is booting LKGC is not there
as an option.

What can I do to fix this problem?? I need my pc and can't afford a new one.
I have a Compaq Presario 5102us with Windows XP Pro. Someone PLEASE HELP
ME!!! :(

How to do a repair install.

If you have problems with your power surging and going out, Wal-Mart has a
battery backup for about $30 which will give you time to shut your machine
down.

I already did the Repair Windows using the XP CD (I used the link I put on my
posting). But I still can't go back to my old settings... what can I do???

Follow the instructions on the link I give you. This is the correct way to
repair XP, I have never seen the repair method you used, not saying it is
wrong, the repair method I give you the CD will do all the work for you. I
would not recommend anyone using the recovery console to do a repair
install.

I went to the site u told me and one of the warnings tells me several options
of things I could do. One of them has the same link I posted on my original
posting - the "Windows Crashed? Here's help" by Charlie White and that's what
I did.

I will keep reading and see what it tells me. If it's too complicated then i
think im just gonna let it be.. it sucks, but I dont have a lot of time or pc
knowledge to do all that stuff. Thanks anyway.

Oh, River_Rat another question,
If I do these steps from the link u gave me... is it for sure the pc will go
back to how it was, even though it is now how u would see Windows when u
first install Windows XP? Will it work anyway and go back to my old settings?

Thanks

A repair install is pretty easy.
Put your retail CD of XP in the CD-Rom, Restart your computer.
When it restarts you will see a black screen and a message saying Press Any
Key to Boot From CD at this point you will hit the space bar or any key, you
will have to be quick the message will only be there for a few seconds.
Note: If you do not see this message you will need to set the BIOS to boot
from CD.

Next
After hitting a key you will see a Blue Screen and it will load some files,
then you will see a Blue Screen with 3 choices at this point you will choose
Enter then you will have to Press F8 to accept the license agreement then
you will see another Blue Screen with 3 more choices and your Windows
Install highlighted in a box at this point you will choose R and it will
perform the repair on the install.

You will need to visit MS Windows Update and download all the updates.

You should not loose any information but it is always a good idea to backup
all important information should something go wrong.

Yeah but If I do these steps from the link u gave me... is it for sure the pc
will go
back to how it was, even though it is now how u would see Windows when u
first install Windows XP? Will it work anyway and go back to my old
settings? Cause right now Im using my pc, but it's not on the settings I had
it before I started having problems with it. If I do these steps, is it going
to take it back to my old settings with everything normal like before the
problem?

It will go back to the default windows setting just like it was when it was
new, the only difference will be it will still have all your information on
it, all saved files, outlook express settings, address book and all that
will remain the same unless something goes wrong and you have to do a clean
install.
That is the reason for the backup.
