Julie.........

I have the Windows XP installed on my computer with AOL
7.0 and before I click the AOL. icon on my desktop, i get
an error message.(Modem link has encountered a problem
and needs to close)(send error report). I also have a
problem with the "Internet Explorer" pop-ups
saying "Internet Explorer Script Error, Do you want to
continue running scripts on this page?" This is a custom
built computer and I really don't know how to fix these
problems.Sounds to me, like there may be a problem with
Internet explorer. Can anyone tell me how to check to see
if my internet explorer is working properly? When i click
my internet explorer icon on my desktop... It says
that "this page cannot be displayed". Thanks...

AOL is crap because it seems to be designed so that you're stuck with it.
They don't like to lose a single customer and their software seems to be
designed so that you cannot remove or uninstall it without crippling the PC
into which it was installed. Once you've run an AOL cd installation
diskette you're f****d ! If at all practical and if you can drop your
system back to a "restore point" before you installed the rubbish, do so.
Then cancel your AOL subscription, (which is almost impossible - they'll
repeatedly give you an extra free 3 months subscription to AOL each time you
try to cancel, in the hope that you'll forget to cancel you direct debit),
and subscribe to a proper ISP. This of course means that you'll have to
install a decent 3rd party firewall, and configure it properly, and learn
how to use it properly, because AOL used to do all that for you !

Do not post your unmunged email address on Usenet or messageboards. You
will probably get even more spam and viruses sent to you now.

The problems you are experiencing are usually caused by viruses and/or
spyware. What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a
version not earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions)
show? Also, remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure
to update these programs before running them. These programs are free,
so run them both since they complement each other. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also need to
run CWShredder from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html .
Please read the instructions carefully. Also, make sure you've visited
Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not install driver
updates from Windows Update. Make sure you are running a firewall. I
don't believe you can use XP's built-in firewall with AOL, so get a
free third-party one like the program from Sygate:

this sounds like your modem is not good enough if 56k
try newer version 92v more info travels through it and
thats what is missing

AOL uses proprietary Network setup. This means that AOL does
not use normal Windows tools to implement it's software.
That's the tradeoff with AOL ( & why most knowledgeable Tech's )
want nothing to do with AOL. You get simplicity, but are locked
into AOL's methods.

As Dennis Miller says "I don't want to get off on a Rant here, But"
You would be better served by a non-proprietary ISP. I can't count
the number of AOL users I've helped move to other ISP's.
(This includes their other divisions CompuServe,etc...)

Another problem is all your Email and Addresses are in a proprietary
format. If and when you leave and want to move all your personal
data to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express you are in for a rude
awakening.

Also, using any ISP's interface software works against you. If you
only know AOL you are never going to learn Outlook Express &
other standard Windows applications. That's why no matter which
ISP you choose, don't install their CD software. Just use the native
tools/apps built into Windows to setup Networking and email.
If you use AOL and nothing else, what happens when you use a
different PC that doesn't have AOL ?

I normally don't universally recommend against any one product,
but AOL is the exception.. Save yourself some money, and learn
how to use the "Real" internet.

(The reason I didn't offer any advice on your problems is because
untangling AOL's maze of interconnected junk is pointless.) AOL's
day has come and gone and the gone part is what you should do
with them - Leave.
