I read a thread just yesterday on Norton 2006, which I can't find now, where
someone mentioned it's not even that good. My Norton's 2006 AV subscription
expired, and it's $49.00 for another one year subscription. I get a popoup
every morning to renew.
Norton 2006 is extremely bloated, slows the machine down. I also got Norton
Ghost 9.0, another offender. Someone mentioned that Norton 2006 AV is not
even that good after finding viruses.
Here's my current situation.
I went from one of two separate PC's at my business to 3 of them networked,
connected to the internet. I went from one PC at home on the internet to 4
networked to the internet. Because Norton is strict on installing one copy on
more than one machine, at home, one of my home PC is on Nortons, and the
other three is under AOL Safety and Security which is included in my monthly
$9.95 subscription. Got two installed in the office on Nortons, apparently
illegally.
On AOL Safety and Security, for this $9.95, I get:
unlimited storage for emails/7 addresses
internet security
firewall
phishing
spyware
parental control
Seems I got to pay $49.00 for each PC if I continue on Norton. I don't know
how many PC's AOL lets me use it up to, but they enforce it but periodically
asking for for AOL master password to verify I'm a paying member
What do you do if you have 4 to 8 machines???
- Go with FREE AV software?? Do they update viruses periodically?? Do I
download the virus list manually??
- Go with AV through the Router??
- Go with parental control thru the router?? I just got Verizon Fios
installed, and parental control through the router runs $9.95/month for up to
10 machines.
My Plans
Uninstall Nortons and use AOL Safety and security on all the machines at
$9.95/month subscription. Problem here is I'm not sure if Nortons can be
uninstalled completley.
How well does AOL work??
I have no idea how good it is. It seems to pick up spyware, blocks it, and
checks for viruses, tells me every so often the virus is updated.
Microsoft One Care?
How good is it?? How is it pricewise??
Bottomline
I can't see paying $49.95/year for each PC, in my case times 8, if the
software is not that good.
Maybe I can finally get rid of that Norton's Popup.
