Help... Lost files

Prior to coming home from Vacation, I showed all my pictures taken
while on vacation in Hawaii to my daughter from my laptop. I had
previously stored them there from my Digital Camera. When I returned
home the next day, the file folder HAWAII was not on the hard drive.
I looked in the recycle bin to see if it had been deleted. It was not
there. There was one picture there that I had deleted. I restored it
from the recycle bin and it came back to the hard drive in a folder
called HAWAII. That's where it was when I deleted it. The other
pictures are not there.

I hesitate to do anything on the laptop because the picture files
would be written over if they can be recovered. My questions are:

1. Will a system restore to an earlier date do the trick? If not,
will it over write where the missing pictures are?

2. Should I look for restoration software to undelete files?

Any help would be appreciated. There are about 200 pictures that I
treasure there.

I downloaded the free one and put it on an external Hard drive so as
not to write to the Hard drive and take a chance on overwriting... No
joy there.

I then purchased Recover my Files version 3.8 and installed it on the
external drive. Had no joy there either.

I was able to use 3.8 and get the last 30 pics that were deleted on my
Camera Flash disk.

It's strange. I demonstrated the Hawaii file, using Windows XP fax
viewer. Shut down the notebook normally. The next time I used the
Notebook, the file was gone. I'm afraid to use System restore to
the last date I had the file. Will this work? Has anyone used System
Restore to find lost files?
