I can not log on to computer. Computer boots up normal but when I attempt to
log on user, it will go to desktop, then immediatly pop up with "logging off'
and go back to log on screen. I have 4 user names at log on screen and all do
the same. I was told that I may have a virus. What are my options? Thanks in
advance.

You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892893

--or--

The problem may be an incorrect system drive letter. With a networked
machine, open the registry and connect to the problematic machine and
navigate to:

[MACHINE_NAME\HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]

and delete all values that look like this:

\DosDevices\C
\DosDevices\D
\DosDevices\E
and so on

When finished, make sure you disconnect the machine from the registry. There
are other ways to gain access to the registry if you cannot connect to the
problematic machine via networked Registry. Please let me know if you need
information on how to gain access to the Registry if you cannot by a
networked registry.

WTC, thanks for the response....after reading your suggestions, I referred to
the post on "removal of Wsaupdater..." and I did remember that one of the
last things I did before the problem started was running Adaware and I do
believe that that was one of the items removed. I followed the directions for
Recovery Console to the best of my computer abilities and after I logged on,
I did get a fast pop up stating that the "copy was
succesfull....userinit.exe.." but as fast as it popped up, it logged off
again. I think that I need that method of gaining access to registry without
use of networked registry. I think that it may solve my problem. Thanks again

This method will involve using BartPE Bootable CD.

1. Make a BartPE Bootable CD
Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Follow the directions on their webpage to create this CD/DVD.

2. Boot the Computer with the BartPE CD/DVD.

3. Open the Run dialog box from the Start Menu and type "regedit.exe"
without the quotes.

4. Highlight the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" hive.

5. From the File menu select "Load Hive".

6. Navigate to the following location on your hard drive.

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\config"

and select the file "SYSTEM". (Has no file extension)

7. Name the Hive "MyPC".

8. Navigate to this location in the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyPC\MountedDevices]

9. Delete all values that look like this:

DosDevices\C
DosDevices\D
DosDevices\E
and so on

10. Highlight this registration key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\MyPC]

11. From the File menu select "Unload Hive"

12. Reboot and remove BartPE CD/DVD.

13. Try logging into Windows.

NOTE: You could also slave the hard drive to another Windows XP/2003 machine
to perform these steps.

WTC..

Well, it took some time but I created BartPe boot cd. I used my oem xp disk
and slipstreamed Service Pack 1a and it booted the troubled computer
successfully and reached the BartP enviroment, however it does not recognize
C: drive, only Floppy A:, RamDisk B:, BartPe D: and CD Drive E:, so unable to
edit registry.
I went and purchaced a 2.0 USB/ATA HDD enclosure and hooked up to my "new"
computer and again does not recognize the HDD, yet unit recognized another
HDD in same enclosure just fine. I then slaved the troublesome HDD to
computer and HDD is not recognized there either.
Due to the fact that I bough a new computer, heck..I needed to upgrade
anyhow, now its just a matter of retreiving data from the uncooperative HDD.
Based on the above information and from prior posts, do you think that I can
still retrieve the data? Thanks again.

Based on what you posted, I would think the data is irretrievable but a Hard
Drive Recovery company might be able to gather the files for you. These
companies can be very expensive.

I also have heard Windows 98/ME might be able to see the data but I have
never tried this before.
