I have my desktop connected to the Internet via a cable modem and a wireless
router. My laptop connects via a wireless network card and the same router
but niether can see each other at all. Instead I see various messages in
Event log about the Master Browser stopping or forcing an election, each M/C
thinking it is the M.B., network I.D could not register with I.P x, P.C with
I.P y will not allow
name to be claimed by P.C with I.P x, the M.B. receives notice that P.C. x
or y is the M.B. forDomain on transport NetBT_Tcpip. Also I think I may have
inadvertantly set up two networkshow do I remove one of them? Any help would
be greatly appreciated by one completly baffled beginner.--

Tuftie,

First, please make sure that the required network components and services are
present, and running, on both computers.

Check for misconfigured / overlooked firewalls, and for registry setting
restrictanonymous.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we can diagnose your problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

As you can see from the messages in this news group, network browsing
in Windows XP causes problems for lots of people.

In my opinion, it's often not worth the trouble to try to troubleshoot
and fix something that's so inherently unreliable.

To access shared disks and folders on another computer, type the other
computer's name in the Start | Run box in this format:

\\computer

Did you set up different workgroup names on the two computers? If so,
that will make browsing through My Network Places harder, but Start |
Run | "\\computer" will work fine.

To change the workgroup name, run the Network Setup Wizard, or go to
Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | System | Computer Name
and click Change.

Hi there to all,
The answer to your question is yes, Ido have two different workgroup names
and I will give your suggestion a shot. at the moment though, I am half
through Chucks advice and up to now everything appears to be O.K. with the
desktop. The laptop may be a different story however, since I have just
discovered that if I run the desktop with the laptop turned off,all is O.K.
regarding getting online etc. With both M/c turned on everything is lost on
both and I have to reboot the desktop, turn off laotop, to get back onlne.

Thanks to each for your advice, I am confident that with it I will get there
in the end.

My apologies for the lateness in replying. I found all the articles suggested
to me by Chuck to be very helpful indeed. After following up and reading
them all I now have my network set up and working pefectly. My laptop turned
out to be the source of my problem. NeTBios over TCP/IP had been the
difficulty and once I had corrected this and uninstalled Zonealarm on both
machines everything was fine.

Thanks again to all for your expert advice.

That's great news. Thanks for updating the thread.

But please don't stop there - a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm (or Windows
Firewall) is essential in a secure network. Install / activate a firewall, and
set it up properly, please.
