I can't send emails from Windows Mail. I just purchased a new Dell with Vista
preloaded. When I try and when I click on Send/Receive I get the following
error message:

Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'pop-server.cfl.rr.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server
Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

Can any one help?

Do you have the outgoing server set to
smtp-server.cfl.rr.com

this appears to be your SMTP server, according to your POP server name

The error message below is not the result of a failed Send,
it reflects a failed Receive operation. To narrow this problem down,
click the little down arrow next to Send/Recv, and first try a
Receive All, then a Send All, and notice which operation
produces an error.

Your right. I tried clicking on the arrow and I cand send but not receive. Is
there a solution that would allow me to receive messages in Windows Mail?

The error message '-ERR invalid command' is very unusual.
I assume you have rebooted your computer several times, but it still
produces that error every time you try to receive mail?

My only suggestion at this point is to make sure that your antivirus
program is NOT configured to scan email, since that can cause
various problems:

I am using Mcafee antivirus program. I disabled the Inbound emailand Outbound
Scanning, rebouted and am still getting the same message.

Any other suggestions?

If you type the error number in help it won't find anything (not as smart as
XP) but on the No Results page ckick Knowledge Base and you'll find heaps of
possible causes. Looking at the summaries a guess is you are authenicating
wrong.

Now that you have it disabled, remove your mail account, close WinMail and
reopen it and then add the mail account back again. Then try it. And are
you sure McAfee is disabled?

A Google search indicates that the most likely cause for that
error message is trying to use Secure Password Authentication
with a server that doesn't use that feature.

Gary VanderMolen

By any chance do you have "Log on using Secure Password Authorization" checked?
If so, try unchecking it.

I know. I'm teaching how to solve problems.

Hey! I can receive emails now. You guys are GREAT! I turned off my "Log on
using Secure Password Authorization", and I can now receive emails.

I was getting very discouraged as this is my first computer!

Great Job!!!

Please help - I am having the same problem...I'm trying to set up my AOL on
My Windows Mail (with Vista)...
can I do that? Please reply...

Exact same error message?

I don't have AOL's mail server settings. Perhaps you can find them
on the web, or some kind soul who has the AOL settings will jump in here.

I had the same problem after using Windows mail for one month. For some
reason I could not receive e-mails after I backed up my laptop. I followed
your instructions and found the Log on box checked. Works now.....

Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback.
