Help! Hardware problems preventing XP install?

M

mahalie

I'm trying to upgrade from Windows Home Edition to Windows XP Pro on a
new (refurbished) Fujitsu N6010 notebook computer with 512Mb RAM,
Mobile Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor, 60 GB Toshiba MK602GAS hard
drive drive, DVD/CD-RW w generic driver.

During install I got a "cannot copy the file xxx.xx_". I tried a
myriad of things to fix the problems but have not been able to. XP Pro
seems to have installed, actually, but after reading on the issue a
while it would seem to indicate there's a hardware error.

I just bought my laptop from ClearanceClub.com. I have a 90 day
warranty from Fujitsu; and a (crappy) 10 day return policy through CC.
I don't know where to even begin! I ran a memory test utility that
tested good, so I'm ruling out a memory problem for now.

I suspect my DVD/CD-RW drive (no real reason), or motherboard, or
processor problem? Can someone point me to hardware diagnostics for
total noobs? I'm a web designer (not networker or hardware geek). Any
hints? I don't know where to oo from here.

Thanks!!!!!!! in advance!

Sounds like the DVD drive is having trouble reading the Windows CD. try a
lens cleaner on the drive and make sure the CD is very clean - even a
thumbprint can cause problems.

I tried cleaning the CD and installing from a different XP Pro CD.
This did not work. Then, because I suspected the DVD/CD drive might be
the problem I tried installin from an external drive. This did not
work either. I got the same "cannot copy file" errors.

How can I find out if my hard drive or motherboard is defective?

unlikely to be motherboard but I suppose the HDD could have a bad sector-
run scandisk - select My Computer and right click the HDD - Properties -
Tools - Error Checking - Tick both boxes and Start - it'll require a restart
and will take some time to do a thorough scandisk. alternatively go to
Toshibas website and download their diagnostic software to run on the HDD.

Finally finished. I called the manufacturer (Fujitsu always has tech
support available, which is pretty awesome!) and the said that they get
a lot of calls about my model upgrading to XP pro and the only thing to
do is fdisk, format and clean install pro.

So I did and that worked. Hope it helps someone else out there.

One thing to note, during a clean install xp requests insertion of an
old MS OS disc to make sure you qualify for the upgrade! System restore
discs (that include the OS) don't work, I had to borrow an ancient Win
95 disk from my neighbor.
