Help! - FP2002 "Can't Open File..."

D

David Lipetz

Hi,

Never had this error before. Been using FP 2002 rto create simple one-page
HTML files.

If I create a new file, then Save As a different name in the same directory
or another directory, FP won't open the new file. It gives me the error
message "Can not open file..." with the complete path to the file.

Very strange. I do this to create separate versions of the basic message
with content changes. This used to work. I've rebooted, stopped and started
FP, to no avail.

Even stranger, if I use File Explorer to move an HTML file from one folder
to another, FP won't open the file in the new folder.

Any ideas why FP won't open the file?

Very frustrating!

Thanks,
David

Are you opening a web each time? FP works best when you use File Menu | Open
Web and then create your pages and make sure that you have imported all
images into this open web.

No. I've been using Open File every time. Always used File Open, never been
a problem before. If a create a new Web, then bring in the page, should that
work?

It sounds as if the physical file arrangement on your disk
is out of sync with the various indexes and cross-
references that FrontPage's maintains within a Web.

To correct this, open your Web in FrontPage and choose
Recalculate Hyperlinks from the Tools menu.

To prevent it in the future, modify your Web using
FrontPage only.

I'm not using/creating Webs. Just "Pages". Create new "Page", Open "Page",
etc...

Still apply?

You need to always open a web, even if working on a 1 page web.

Wow. Really? I don't want/need FP to setup an entire directory structure and
folders for my pages. Way too complicated. I am not a Web developer, just a
businessman who occassionally creates simple one page HTML pages for use in
mailings to our customers.

But WHY did this work fine before, but no longer?

David,

FP is a web development tool that manages web sites. In order to do that, it
requires all content to be in single folder for each site (or in your case a
1 page web), it does this by convert the folder to web, which has special
attributes assigned, so that FP can manage the content (pages, images, etc.)
as a individual web site.

Why this work in the past and doesn't work now, I have no idea.

What do you mean by "entire directory structure"? All you need to do is
create a single folder, open this folder in FP using File Menu | Open Web,
FP will indicate that it is converting it to a web, done. FP will add 2
subweb folders, _private and images to this folder.

Are you creating these 1 page webs to be used as HTML email?

Have you considered using Word or Stationery option in Outlook or Outlook
Express?

Have you tried the usual repairs
1) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
2) In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
3) Disable or Uninstall any FP Addins
4) Run a Repair / Reinstall on FP

| Yes - Word does funky things when creating files sometimes and OE stationary
| is way too primitive.
|
| I'll just have to use FP Webs and deal with the file structure it wants to
| create... and eventually someone may figure out why File Open won't work
| anymore.
|
| Thanks for the help.
