help for Scanjet 4100C

my OS is XP home, but my scanner works only by chance.
What can I do, that he works trustworthy?

Follow Ty's suggestion....get the XP driver from HP. Then uninstall the
scanner.....install the driver, then reinstall the scanner. Worked for me
with the same hardware.
