Help for a Dummy!

Feel like an absolute idiot. Just received a MS Wireless Optical Mouse,
Model BX4-00003, and cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to open the
battery compartment. It's a rectangular plastic cover on the underside with
a slot in it (which begs to be pryed open) but nothing seems to move and I
dare not try it for fear of damaging the surface.

Any help out there, perhaps from the author of "Mice for (Real) Dummies?" Or
anyone just nice enough to help me out.
