Help!!!!!!!!! Folder Redirection

Kenneth Bryant

Does anybody know how to disable Folder Redirection? I set up group policy
to redirect the "Desktop" folder to a different server. I decided I did not
want to continue using folder redirection, and I set the policy to "Not
Configured". Even though I set the policy to "Not Configured", the Desktop
folder is still being redirected (It's been at least a year since I
configured this). We are running Win2k AD. Thanks in advance.

Folder Redirection is something of a special case. In Group Policy Editor:

click Help, Help Topics
select the Index tab
double click on the folder redirection item
read the section called "Policy removal considerations with regard to Folder
Redirection", particularly the "Important" note immediately below the table
of options.

Essentially, removing the Folder Redirection setting does not necessarily
revert the folders back to their original location. You may have to
"configure" the Folder Redirection and specify "Basic...", "Redirect to the
local user profile location".

I have had this issue also.

I have also see that you can actually drag the folder that was redirected to
another location in Explorer. In this case, you probably want to drag it to
%userprofile%. Explorer then recognizes this folder to be special ie
Desktop, My Documents, and moves accordingly.

There are also registry entries that can be changed. It seems that there
are two entries that refer to the location of "Shell Folders"
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
and
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Of course, if the policy is still applied, this all means nothing. The User
Shell Folders seems to be the one that counts.

This is just some information about Shell Folders. Hope this helps.
