Help!!! Explorer.exe using 200k of memory!

Can anyone help?? I have a dell dimension 4600 running xp
home. When I start xp my explorer.exe is at 8k of memeory.
as the minutes tick away it climbs to almost 200k and
literlally slows my pc to a stop. This happens everytime.
Dell's support is totally useless--they have beginners
running checklists and they're hopeless--and I mean
hopeless. I can only use my computer for a few mintues
each time before I have to reboot. I've seen that others
have the problem, but no solutions. I've reinstalled,
defragged, everything. Is someone out there who can help

Have you tried having Windows Explorer be the only program running - just to
confirm it's only Windows Explorer. And, don't do anything other than boot
up, open Windows Explorer.

Also, the custom is to post questions and responses in the news group - not
send email. The culture says - if you're not interesting enough to check
back, people aren't interested enough to try to help.

Sorry, no free email support. What does a scan with a current antivirus
program (meaning a version not later than 2002 and using updated virus
definitions) show? Also, remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy
from www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be
sure to update these programs before running them. It is best to run
antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. If you need more
help, then please post back after you know your machine is clean. Be
sure to include information about what you've already done to
troubleshoot.
