Okay i wont and cant do a repair install now anyways. Called dell, they said
try a restore, Ctrl f11) that wont work, no restore point.
I am trying to get the XP2 cd from Dell.
And to think it all happened by uninstalling IE8.
reinstall is the only thing i can do, so says everyone.
thanks for help Pa Bear...
Hope i can fix his PC soon.

ok, rite now im making a xp2 cd, hope it will let me boot it and repair
install. im slipstreaming it, hope it works.
hope dell will offer help, and the service key tag is still on the
machine.
PA Bear said:He should have done a clean install of Windows when he took first
possession of this used machine.
1. Contact Dell Support for instructions on how to return the machine to
OOBE state using the Dell WinXP SP1 CD.
2. Backup the personal data to removable media.
3. Return the machine to OOBE state, after which you'll have the
equivalent
of a "new computer" so take care of everything on the following page
before
otherwise connecting the machine to the internet or a network and before
using a USB key that isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:
Five steps to help protect your new computer before you go online
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/advanced/xppc.mspx
NB: Restoring the machine to OOBE may reinstall a Norton, McAfee or other
free-trial. It will NOT be valid and should be removed before installing
a
new anti-virus application.
For a Norton application, download/run the Norton Removal Tool; see
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
For a McAfee application, do Steps #1 and #2 here:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
4. Follow these instructions to get the machine fully-patched:

dont know of wwhat way you are saying to access restore. thru taskmgr?
resore icon does nothing.
im thinking of doing the partition, do i boot from xp1 disk?
and, they say that the key id# is in the bios. how do i access his key
id
so
i dont have to use mine which is still on my hubby's PC.??

Is the machine (purchased in July-08, according to your previous post)
still under warranty or service contract?
What are your F8 options at boot?

the pc looks like an xp start with upgrade to xp2/3,
i do not know how to recover, i cant run any programs tru task manager
and
have no idea on partitions or oobe states. maybe i can wipe it and
just
install my xp disk? how do i begin a new install, and wipe the whole
darn
thing? since no one has an xp2 disk around here.

Is there an available Restore Point which predates the install of
IE8
(cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084)?
If there's no OEM disks, chances are there's a hidden Recovery
partition
that can be used to return the machine to OOBE state.
Personally, I don't think you're going to be able to fix this without
using
System Restore or returning the machine to OOBE (like-new) state,
Sammy.

winxp2 w/ sp3
unknown which was in first, owner says it has SP3 hwen he got it

last
year.
It has store bought McCaffe virus program.
I cannot open System Restore, when i do from task manager, it does
nothing.
Mcaffe was possibly on when i removed IE8, but i remember stoppong
its
scan
casue it was bogging us down.
Third party Firewall: if mcaffe has one, then yes. Then of course MS
has
thiers too. I cant get anything to run on the pc, well, an IE
window,
but
cannot connect to web because of this glitch. its a cricket mobile
modem
the
programs just wont run ..
has to be the ordinal code error.

[Crossposted to IE General newsgroup]
Please state the full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) of the
machine
in
question.
If it's WinXP SP3, which was installed first, IE7 or SP3?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is
the
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than
Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these
applications running in the background when IE8 and/or SP3 and/or
IE7
was
installed and/or uninstalled?
Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
Is there an available Restore Point which predates the install of
IE8
(cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084)?
