HELP! - DNS, DHCP & Dial-up Not Working!

Jody

OS: Windows 2000 Pro SP3, Browser: IE 6.0 SP1, NIC: 3Com
10/100 PCI 3C905-TX

ERROR1: System Event Log: Source: DHCP Event ID: 1006
(couldn't find in MS-KB)
"Your computer was unable to automatically configure the
IP parameters for the Network Card with the address
0004575A0DDIF. The following error occurred during
configuration: The requested service provider could not be
loaded or initialized"

ERROR2: Dialup Networking "680 No Dial Tone" Can't
connect to "known good" line, modem & cable.
When connected previously got , ( don't know what happened
that I can't connect now except my client was poking
around)

ERROR3: Cannot browse Internet in browser via IP or FQDN.

ERROR4: IPConfig / Renew: "The following error occurred
when renewing adapter Local Area Connection 3: An
operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

WHAT WORKS:

Cables, NIC's & Modems Verified operational.
Can Ping IP's but not FQDN
Can Ping other P2P PC vi NetBIOS or IP & Vice Versa.
Both machines can browse and access each others files and
printers.
NIC Loop back Ping successful

TROUBLSHOOTING ATTEMPTS:

Went through ALL settings with ISP
Un-Installed and Re-Installed Protocol & Clients:
TCP/IP, Client for Microsoft Networks & Printer & File
Sharing (not other items loaded)
Device Manager reports all hardware is operating with no
conflicts.
All NIC's & Modems PCI with correct drivers loaded.
Verified DHCP service is set to "Automatic" and re-started.
Compared ALL TCP/IP & Dial-Up Setting on other working
computer using same resources.

QUESTIONS - OBSERVATIONS:

RE: IPCONFIG: The only thing I can see that is different
from the two machines is the "Note Type: is "Hybrid" and
the functional machine and "Broadcast" on the one that is
not working.

I this an issue? If so where would this get changed?

IPCONFIG / Release does not work on either machine and
returns a message something to the effect of DHCP has not
assigned an IP so there is nothing to release. Both
machines do show an Autoconfiguration IP address:
Working: 169.254.16.54
Not Working: 169.254.150.188

Both also report:
IP routing & WINS Proxy NOT Enabled
DHCP & Autoconfig ENABLED
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
No Default Gateway or DNS servers

Well, usually the Autoconfig IP is due to a DHCP not being available.
Obviously it seems from your description that dialup isn't establishing (for
whatever reason), therefore, no DHCP server is available and it creates the
APIPA (Auto Private IP Address). A /release will not release an APIPA number
since it wasn't provided by DHCP.

I wouldn't worry about the Hybrid type. The issue seems to be establishing a
connection first. DEfault gate and DNS would come with a DHCP proviided
address.

As for the "Not a socket" message, here's the steps to take care of that. I
wonder what your client did poking around?

318584 - Operation Was Attempted on Something That Is Not a Socket Error
Message When You Try to Obtain an IP Address:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=318584

As for the Event ID 1006, this link pretty much says the same thing the
above article says:
http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1006&source=

So whatever your client did, he sure did it good!

As for the no dialtone, did you try to delete the dialup session then
reinstall it? If not yet, delete the dialup session, and try to recreate it.
Maybe he/she messed with the COM ports? But if both machines are not working
(evident by the APIPA), then I would also look at the other machine to see
if it gets a dialtone. Double click on the connection and see if it gets a
dialtone. If all else fails, and the settings on the dialup connection are
correct, delete it again, then follow that MS tech article then reinstall
the dialup session.

NOt sure what else to say here...since this was really NOT a DNS question,
but a connectivity question. You may be able to also post this in
win2000.networking newsgroup too for more exposure.

Ace,

Thanks for all that info. I will do as you suggest. It
is important, I believe, to note that other computer DOES
dialup and resolve DNS just fine.

The DNS part of this is that earlier when I could dialup,
DNS would not resolve. I could ping IP's ok but not the
domain and therefore could not browse with IE.

I was thinking some how that the dialup and DHCP errors
were perhaps related to what seems to be the original
issue DNS issue. I am not sure which came first the
chicken or the egg. :-0

With that said - Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jody

Sorry, no other ideas. Completely uninstall and resinstall dialup and TCP/IP
on the bad machine, as per those articles.
