I have reformatted my hard disk & realised that I have not copied a file I
need.

Does anyone know if it is possible to retrieve the info?

Many thanks

It's possible. I was able to retrieve just about everything from a drive
that was formatted and had Windows reinstalled. However, the software I use
is a bit pricy for one use, unless that file is really important.

If there's a local shop that has similar recovery software, having them get
the file for you might end up being cheaper.

If you do a search online for data recovery software, un-erase and
un-format, you might find something that will work and will be cheaper.

Stop using the drive that was reformatted!

Now that I've got your attention, there's a couple of things you need to
know. First, if you recently defragmented your hard drive before the
reformatting, you'll probably not be able to recover the file. If it was
drive C that got reformatted and you already reinstalled all your software,
you'll probably not be able to recover the file. If it was drive D and you
have all your temporary files and folders located on this drive, you'll
probably not be able to recover the file.

With all this said, there are a lot of products out there designed to
recover files. Prices range wildly. I would say that you get what you pay
for. If you find freeware ot shareware, don't expect success. If you find
something worth gazzillions of dollars, it's probably meant for the corporate
environment - but worth it. It could probably recover file fragments -
portions of the "Key to the Universe Report" you were working on, maybe?

Like others have said, you may have to weigh the cost of the lost file
against the cost of recovering it or replacing it. If it were me and the file
was on drive C and I wanted to recover it, I would just take it down to my
local computer store that offers this service and have them recover the
file(s). If the file was on drive D, I would try to recover it myself.

Just my two cents.

It may be expensive.

If the file you are looking for is on your C drive you will need to
mount that drive as a secondary drive on another PC.

You will need some data recovery software. Download the R Studio demo
available at www.hddrecovery.com.au onto a drive that does not have
the missing file and install it. Get the software to scan the drive
with the missing file, if the demo can find your file then the full
copy will have no trouble getting it back for you.

Good Hunting
