Help! Can't record audio with Vista

I hope someone can help me. I am trying to record ANYTHING audio onto
my new computer, which has Vista. But, have had no luck thus far. I
have tried several audio recording programs (yes, they have said Vista
compatible). I even tried the generic sound recorder program that
comes with it. The strange thing is, I can hear the devices (coming
through the computer speakers) that I have hooked up to the auxiliary
or microphone jacks, but all I get is dead silence when I try to play
back anything that I thought I was recording. I have the recording
level jacked up all the way to 100 on auxiliary. Its probably
something so simple -- anyone have any ideas how to actually record
something?? Thank you!

D'oh. Nevermind. Finally figured out what I was doing wrong. The audio
programs I was using were all defaulting to a different AUDIO IN
device than the one I was trying to use. Simple as that. I had been
screwing around with the windows audio setting instead of those in the
actual program(s). Ugh.
