help: can't paste to ftp

I find I cannot paste files from my computer to an ftp window. I used to to
do this all the time with Windows XP. Do I need to change some settings on
my laptop? More specifically: I've created an html file that I want to
paste to my website. I go to "My Documents" and click on the file and select
"Copy". It copies fine (I've tested this by "pasting" the newly copied file
to other directories on my laptop.) Then I open an internet explorer browser
window and go to ftp://[email protected]. This activates
the ftp program I've always used in the past with no problems, back when I
had Windows XP. I enter my user name and password and it lets me in to the
site. I go to the "public" subdirectory and see the list of files. I
right-click but I cannot "paste", the paste option is not even highlighted.
How can I get my computer to "paste" a file into this ftp window? I've also
tried dragging and dropping but it thinks I am trying to open the file and
says it needs to open it in a new window. Any help would be much
appreciated. Ideally I would like to be able to continue to use this ftp
program as I always have in the past, or alternatively I could try some other
ftp program.

Thanks

PS when signing on to this discussion group the system didn't let me enter
an email address for notification of replies. When I pushed the "edit"
button to add an address, the computer thought I was trying to exit the page
and said all my changes would be deleted. The "edit" button for adding email
addresses for notification of replies appears not to work correctly.

Hi,

From the IE window with the ftp site opened try : Alt key (to activate the
menu bar) | Display | Display the ftp site in Windows Explorer | and try the
paste operation in this window.

Thank you for taking an interest in my problem. I am using Windows Vista
Home Premium on a Fujitsu laptop. Can you help me understand a bit better
what you are suggesting? When I go to the IE window with the ftp program
open and push the "alt" key, nothing happens. I can't find any key on my
keyboard, or any button on my screen, marked "display". Please tell me a bit
more, thanks! Steve

Do you have the menu (File | Edit | View) in IE ? If not, pressing and
releasing the Alt key unhides it.

If yes, click on View | Open site in Windows Explorer and try the paste
operation.

Thanks again for the looking at my questions but I'm still not fully
understanding your suggestions. In Windows Internet Explorer, I do not have
a File -- Edit -- View menu. Pressing and releasing the Alt key is not
making this menu visible. In Windows Internet Explorer, pressing and
releasing the Alt key is not doing anything at all. In Windows Internet
Explorer, by right-clicking I can get a menu that includes the "Paste" option
but the "Paste" option is never highlighted so I am never allowed to select
it. That is the root of my problem.

I can attempt to see the ftp site in Windows Explorer. To accomplish this,
in Windows Internet Explorer I push the "Page" menu button and then select
"Open FTP site in Windows Explorer". In Windows Explorer, I do have the
File--Edit--View menu, after pushing the "Alt" key. In Windows Explorer, I
can choose the "Edit" selection and then get a "Paste" option that I can then
select.

However, the ftp site does never opens correctly in Windows Explorer. I get
a message saying "An error ocurred opening the folder on the FTP server.
Make sure you have permission to open this folder. Details: 550 Failed to
change directory". This happens even though I have entered my user name and
password and have been permitted to I can freely browse all over the website
in the Windows Internet Explorer window. Anyway after this error message,
the directory I'm trying to open just shows up as a blank window in Windows
Explorer. I can then select the "Paste" option and attempt to paste my
content into the directory but I get a repeat of the error message "An error
ocurred opening the folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission
to open this folder. Details: 550 Failed to change directory", and a second
message saying "Calculating the time required to upload the files" which
never resolves, so the files never get uploaded.

In summary-- in Windows Internet Explorer--the ftp program seems to open
correctly and I have permission to access the directories I need but I cannot
paste into them. Right-clicking gives me a "Paste" option but it is not
highlighted so I cannot select it. I cannot find any menu button that gives
me another "paste" option. The "alt" key does nothing.

In Windows Explorer-- I can get a "Paste" option either by right-clicking or
by using the "Alt" key to get the File / Edit / View menu. The "Paste"
option is selectable. However the ftp program does not open correctly in
Windows Explorer. When I try to view the files of a directory I get an error
message, and when I try to paste content into a directory I get an error
messasge. The error messages seem to involve permission to enter the ftp
site although I have entered my user name and password and can browse the
site without problems using Windows Internet Explorer. It does not look
using Windows Explorer instead of Window Internet Explorer is going to be the
solution to my problem.

Is there some way for me to paste my content into the ftp site using Windows
Internet Explorer?

Alternatively, is there something that else I need to do to get Windows
Explorer to work for my purpose?

Do I need to use some other program entirely to transfer my files?

Do I need to go back to Windows XP which has always allowed me to transfer
files using the ftp function of Windows Internet Explorer in the past?

Thanks... Steve S

right click a blank spot in the IE toolbar, select Menu Bar.
that should make the File Edit View Favorites Tools Help menu available.
But it's not at the top where it belongs, IE7 stuffs it down somewhere
between the other toolbars.
Just another example of poor design IMHO.
MS claims it helps reclaim window space.
I think they should clean up some of the other garbage and leave the
standard toolbar/menu alone.

That did work. And now the "Alt" key is also working to bring up that menu.
I'm sure it wasn't before. However the fundamental problem remains. The
"paste" option on this menu is light grey and cannot be selected, even when
I've "copied" an html file from my documents menu that I wish to "paste" into
the ftp directory. That is the exact same problem that I had when I accessed
the "paste" option by right-clicking on a blank spot in the Windows Internet
Explorer window. Either way I get to the "paste" option, I'm not allowed to
actually select it, even immediately after I've "copied" an html file from
my documents menu. So I'm still not able to "paste" any files into my
website via the ftp program as displayed on Windows Internet Explorer. So,
I'm still stuck!

Not Me

YOU CAN'T DO IT FROM INTERNET EXPLORER, YOU HAVE TO DO IT FROM WINDOWS
EXPLORER, ANOTHER 'IMPROVEMENT' THAT STARTED WITH IE7

Ok. Thanks for your specific directions "Not Me". So I know I need to use
Windows Explorer not Windows Internet Explorer. And I know how to find the
"paste" option. However, the ftp site does not open correctly in Windows
Explorer. I get a message saying "An error ocurred opening the folder on the
FTP server. Make sure you have permission to open this folder. Details: 550
Failed to change directory".

I can then select the "Paste" option and attempt to paste my content into
the directory but I get a repeat of the error message "An error ocurred
opening the folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to open
this folder. Details: 550 Failed to change directory", and a second message
saying "Calculating the time required to upload the files" which never
resolves, so the files never get uploaded.

All this happens even though, when originally bringing the FTP site up on
Windows Internet Explorer, I was prompted for my user name and password and
was permitted to freely browse all over the target website (that I wished
to FTP too) in the Windows Internet Explorer window. I was not prompted
again for my user name and password when I viewed the website with Windows
Explorer.

Is there some setting I need to change?

A secondary problem is that some of the time, both in Windows Internet
Explorer and in Windows Explorer, it doesn't even show me the actual
directory of the website, instead it just shows me a folder named "pub",
which appears to be empty.

So -- I'm still stuck!
