HELP! cant edit query

I am able to refresh my queries in excel, but if I try to edit or connect to
an outside data source through EXCEL I am unable to connect. I am able to
edit the query if I use microsoft query to open, but it doesnt give me an
option to return data to Excel if I do it that way.
Office 2000
Excel
I have reinstalled office 3 times.
 
What is the exact message that you get when you try to edit or connect to the
data source?
