Help!! Can't boot Win2k: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

T

Tamara Hills

I'm getting the following Blue Screen error when i try to
boot:

STOP: 0X0000007B(....) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

I didn't make any hardware changes to my machine which
most of the articles on the websites suggest. it
suggests checking for viruses. I have Mcafee installed
and it didn't warn me of anything. Also, how does one
run a virus scan when one can't boot?????

I went into the recovery console and ran a chkdsk. it
found some errors, but i'm not sure if I should risk
repairing them, or what the next step should be.

I read another article that talks about this error
ocurring with removal of Roxio Easy CD creator (which I
have had installed for close to 3 years now).

I've already tried safe mode and all those other
options. No luck booting to safe mode.

What should I try next?

Any help appreciated.

You may need to temporarily install your disk as a slave
disk in some other Win2000/XP PC, then scan it for viruses.

I would try formating the system and re-installing
everything fresh. By formating the harddrive the system
will tell you if these harddrive errors can be fixed.

- Run chkdsk from the Recovery Console and fix any errors that you can.
- Post back here if you still have problems

Tamara,

I'm getting the following Blue Screen error when i try to
boot:

STOP: 0X0000007B(....) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

we've seen this problem with specific hard drives, and got rid of it
by exchanging them against a different brand. (We're building
computers to control our machines.) The possible explanations are bad
contact to the interface cable, in this case the IDE cable connecting
the hard drive to the cpu board, anddifferent sensitivity to power
fluctuations (5 V, 12 V, 24 V, AC, ...). The bad contact would have
been due to slightly shorter pins in the ribbon cable connector on the
hard drive. Power fluctuations might be countered by using stabilized
power (110 V AC, or whatever your wall power is) threough, e.g., an
uninterruptable power supply or similar device.

Cheers, Jochen
