Help! cannot log onto newly installed win xp

ok heres my (somewhat urgent) dilema...
last week i finally upgraded my laptop from winME to
winXP, no problems.
this morning i did the same thing for my desktop except
it was from win2000, which i was fine with that os, but
it had a few problems... so anyway, i decided to upgrade
insted of just reinstalling win2000
-heres the problem:
when i startup my computer and go to logon i get this
messege:
windows product activation:
A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking
for this computer. Error code: 0x80004005

if i press the given ok button it procedes to load my old
wallpaper and then log right back out the welcome screen

any suggestions will be much appreciated, thank you very
much

Are you trying to use the same XP CD for both installations/upgrades?

a friend sent it in a zip version, i used the exact same
file both times
also i have been able to get into windows if i startup in
safe mode, this doesnt help much though, as i dont know
even where to begin fixing this problem

You are acting illegally twice. XP via a zip file and trying to install XP onto a 2nd PC. Please go out and purchase a legal copy of XP via a retailer. I'm sorry, but I can't help you any further.

update... i can log in under safe mode, but NOT safe mode
with networking (gives the same error)
