HELP !! BASIC STORAGE SOLUTION on network

hello everyone..
i am in search of a network storage solution for my small network my
general concerns are-
1.storage should be fast ,not blistering fast ,but fast enough to
avoid hickups!
2.Should back up the data itself.
3.Can have any capacity but should be atleast 80 gigs .
should not cost more than 200 bucks including HD

i have gone options and suggestions and here are some of them...
1.To go for a NAS such as netgear or linksys or buffalo but have seen
reviews which complain about speed...
2.To go for a router which has a port for a USB hard drive.
3.To go for a no frill computer with a good HDD

I have a network of about 4 computers and they share data with each
other and every thing is mess due to organization of data.. when i
want to back up i have to hunt for which files to backup and there is
no centralized location..

i am open to suggestions....

There is a thread going on about option 3 ("homebuild NAS
recommendations"), which I would recommend.

thanks for the reply but i guess the person who has started the
thread (homebuild NAS recommendations)has a pc but in my case i dont
have a pc to go along with a storage device . i have gone through a
post which does not recommend the NETGEAR SC101 .... so i was in
search of a similar device but without the fuss of slow speed and
reliabilty ..
what would you recommend...?

Thanks
