Help: ATI Multimedia Video Driver for Rage Fury Display Adaper

P

Prakash R. Bhirud

Hi,

I use Win98 with Rage Fury as display adapter. I recently upgraded the
drivers using the update 4.12.7942 & Multimedia Center 7.1. The
following problem was encountered:

In Device Manager under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" the first
one labeled ."AIT Multimedia Video Driver" has yellow exclamation
point. Checking properties it states"

The MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the
device driver(code 2).

As a consequence I can not Capture any video using Ulead Studio 7.

Can anyone please suggest a solution? I did send a query to ATI. I have
not heard from them.

I rechecked the installation notes which is:

To avoid difficulties running multimedia applications or games you
must install:

DirectX 8.0a Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0 (formerly known as
Digital Video Update for DirectX 8.0)

I have not used this update since I now have DirectX 9.0b. The question
now is:

Can I install DirectX 8.0a Video Capture Update to resolve this issue?

Please e-mail me the solution.

I shall greatly appreciate your response.

Thanks

Prakash

All I can tell you is that whenever my multi-media has gone south during an update, it's been a complete re-install of OS to get it working again.

I don't know what the equivalent software for your card is, Prakash, but
with most ATI capture cards (VIVO and AIW - you don't give much info on what
your card actually is, let alone system info) you need to install capture
drivers as well as a display driver: failing to do this is typically what
causes unknown devices/devices with problems to show up in Sound, video and
game controllers.

Where did you get the update from? Some people are suckered into using M$
updates; this is not a good idea. Use only drivers from ATi's site,
appropriate for your card and OS (or reliable alternative driver developers
like Omegadrive - not suitable for your Rage Fury, anyway) or, if you have
an OEM card, drivers from your OEM's site. It's also a good idea, if you
install an update which causes problems, to uninstall it, remove all traces
of it if possible (use a good registry cleaner and delete appropriate files.
ATi now provide a cat-uninstaller which very effectively removes much ATI
catalyst-related software. I don't know if it would work for Rage Fury
drivers but it would be worth a try, anyway, as it won't remove anything
except ATi files and references), and reinstall your previous driver set.

AIR (it was many moons ago!) the DirectX 8.0a Video Capture Update was
superseded in DirectX 8.1; that would make it definitely not required for
any later version of DirectX. Incidentally, if you see any posts implying
that your card is not DX 9 capable, ignore them. No, it's not DX 9 capable
in that it doesn't have DX 9 hardware capability (in fact, it's probably a
DX 7 or 6 card), but DirectX is always backwards compatible and the routines
will run in software.

Incidentally, it's also considered good manners on Usenet to post only in
plain text. ;-)
