Hi, a few months ago my XP machine developed an annoying problem.

After booting up, I have to unplug the ethernet cable for about a minute
and then plug it back in, or I can't access the internet or other PCs on
our lan.

I have browsed around the net and newsgroups and have come upon a few
people who had the same problem, but nobody posted a solution!

Thanks for any help!

Max

p.p.s. I've tried different NICs but they didn't solve this problem.
And besides the annoyance of it, I think all this unplugging and plugging
is damaging the cable or a connector.

When you boot up and have a problem, try running ipconfig /all at a command
prompt to see if you have an IP address. If you do, try pinging your default
gateway/DHCP server/another working IP on your LAN. Check your event logs.
Try an ipconfig /release and an ipconfig /renew. Try repairing your network
connection (right click on it, choose Repair).

Hi

You are describing a situation Not a problem. There is Not one specific
issue that might cause this situation, it can be Network related or computer
specific.

The problem is somewhere in your Network Setting and you have to find it in
order to fix it.

In General, you can debug the Network Settings of a computer by following
these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer's Device Manager.
Make sure that the Network Card drivers are installed correctly; i.e. there
is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation.

Step Two. Verify Basic network setting in the OS:
http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify If the above two Steps indicates that
every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and
or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

If need to Reinstall; Log to this page it have a lot of links to
instructions for Windows Network
Installation -http://www.ezlan.net/Installing.html

I had that problem when I was using Mepis Linux in a dual boot system.
Every time I booted to Mepis and then re-booted to WinXP, the NIC
would be in some state that WinXP couldn't cope with. The only
solution was to take power off of the NIC. (Not just shut down the
computer, unplug the power cord.) There is a an update to a WinXP
driver that solved the problem. I don't remember what or where at the
moment.

Good luck, jimbo
