Help and Support - Problem !

Hi.

The Help and Supprt content in Vista Ultimate wont display correct.

Have look here:
http://www.tommys-service-enterprise.gmxhome.de/Capture.JPG

What I found out about is that it was related to an older version of
Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks which I uninstalled more related to
Fireworks in this case I guess.
I made a complete PC restore and in the registry under:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.png]

Looked something like this as far as I remember:

Default REG_SZ FFireworks1
Instead of:
Default REG_SZ pngfile

Then I changed the default program for PNG files from Fireworks to Digital
Image Suite and thought that would help but after the uninstall I ended up
with the same problem.
Now the .png registry looks like this which is apperntly correct:

Default REG_SZ pngfile
Content Type REG_SZ image/png
Perceived Type REG_SZ Image

This brought back the images in the offline help content as you can see in
the screenshot but the styles are still not working.
Before also the images weren't present
Please help me out so the Help and Support content will display correct
again with the assigned styles.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Tommy

Hi Ramesh.

Thanks for your reply.
I reinstalled Vista by now and I think that the Help and Support content
does not rely on CSS as well.
It's more some kind of a particular XML at least the way I understand it.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help but by now my system is running flawless
again and I hope it will stay this way.

Thanks again,
Tommy

Tommy,

I face this problem also, after installing/uninstalling Dreamweaver. And the problem is fixed by fixing the "Content Type" settings for .CSS.

If that does not do the trick, inspect (and fix if necessary) the "Content Type" settings for .XML/.XSL as well.

An article on this topic (with a REG fix) is on the way. The article would be published in my Website (mentioned below my signature).

Hi Ramesh.

Thank you very much.
I really appreciate that so in case something similar happens again I might
find help on your website.
It's allready saved in my favorites.
As I said before, I reinstalled Vista and everything is working and also
backed up in case of another failure.
By the way, I got another issue and I hope it's ok to ask about it in this
thread.
I would like to configure the file backup in Vista that it includes certain
files, because when I do a file backup all the javascript and php files are
not included in the backup.
This means all my saved websites would be incomplete in case of a file
restore.
Do you got a solution to that?

Thanks again.

Hi Tommy,

This is what I last heard from MSFT on this problem.

From Jill Zoeller [MSFT]

For this release of Vista, there's no way to do what you want. We are
working on improvements to Backup for future releases. Not that this helps
you much.

Since you're using Ultimate, you could use Complete PC Backups to create a
backup image. There is a way to mount that image and retrieve files if
necessary. This isn't the most elegant solution, but it might suffice for
your needs.

I'm just downloading Virtual Server 2005 and I'm going to install only VHD

Hopefully this works without any problems and if it does then it's a good

You're welcome, Tommy.

If you have any questions, I've played around with vhdmount
and mounting CompletePC's vhds... I might be able to help.

One of those links contain a registry trick that allows you to
easily right click a vhd to mount and dismount it... that makes
it a bit easier.

I mostly use Acronis TrueImage 10, and it lets you easily explore the
contents of an image backup... it's just a better program.

.......thanks again.
By the way I'm using Acronis as well but I must say that I used the Complete
PC backup a few times to restore my system because of my few major screwups
when I was exploring the new Vista system and I must say that it has worked
very well for me.
The only thing I was missing is to explore the backup images like in Acronis.
And I did add the Registry Key like described in one of your links and it
didn't work but maybe I did something else wrong.
I think I'll leave it for now because my system is running flawless at the
moment, this VHD Mount was the 1st problem I had and as you said I can use
Acronis to backup files.
Maybe in the future WinImage will be good for after the Beta release.......

Tommy

:

Hi Michael.

Hi.

Several times I tried to install Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta to mount a
VHD image in Vista Ultimate also using the Registry Key provided.
While installing I did choose to install only VHD Mount and manually
activated the IIS in "Turn Windows features on or off" like described in the
release notes.
But when I try to mount the image by double or right click the VHD file, the
command prompt window opens up for a split second and then closes again and
that's it.
Nothing else happens.
While installing Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 Beta there never came a security
warning asking me if I would like to install this device softeare like shown
here:

http://community.bartdesmet.net/blogs/bart/archive/2006/09/02/4385.aspx

Is this because I have UAC turned off or is there anything wrong with the
installation?
Could you please give me a hint what to do so I can mount the VHD backup
images as well.
If everybody else can do it then I would like to be able as well.

Thank you very much in advance,

Tommy

You're welcome, Tommy.

If you have any questions, I've played around with vhdmount
and mounting CompletePC's vhds... I might be able to help.

One of those links contain a registry trick that allows you to
easily right click a vhd to mount and dismount it... that makes
it a bit easier.

I mostly use Acronis TrueImage 10, and it lets you easily explore the
contents of an image backup... it's just a better program.

Hi Michael.

Thanks for the links.
I'm just downloading Virtual Server 2005 and I'm going to install only VHD
Mount.
Hopefully this works without any problems and if it does then it's a good
solution, I guess.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Tommy,

This is what I last heard from MSFT on this problem.

For this release of Vista, there's no way to do what you want. We are
working on improvements to Backup for future releases. Not that this helps
you much.

Since you're using Ultimate, you could use Complete PC Backups to create a
backup image. There is a way to mount that image and retrieve files if
necessary. This isn't the most elegant solution, but it might suffice for
your needs.

Hey, Tommy.

First thing, after you right click the vhd and select "Mount", go into
Device Manager and see if the virtual drive is listed under Disk Drives,
if it is go to the next step. If it is listed but with an exclamation mark,
you need to select update driver and point it the VHDMOUNT folder.
If you still can not access the vhd, go to the next step.

Next step:
Go into Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Storage>Disk Management

Do you see an unnamed volume listed there? The file system will be "RAW".
If you see that, right click it, and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths".
A little dialog box will pop up, click "Add", it will assign it a drive letter, or
you can change it if you want, click OK. Either right before that or right after,
I don't remember- there may be a pop up warning that you need to format the
volume before you can use it, *Cancel* out of that. The volume should now be
listed under computer management and you should be able to access it through
Windows Explorer.

There may be an easier way of doing this, I don't know it. I don't really mess with
this too much cause I use Acronis. Hopefully, if I've given you less than stellar advice,
someone will speak up and give you better advice.

I will be out most of the day, but I will reply as soon as I can.

Take care,

Michael

Hi Michael.

I did all that but at no time there is a new drive present and I give up on
it now.
But I just downloaded WinImage and I can explore the VHD file without any
problems at all.
Also I can extract the files from the VHD image.
Works absolutly easy.
Is there anything wrong with WinImage?
I just wonder because nobody did mention it in here, I downloaded version
8.0.8000
If there are any known problems or anything else please let me know
otherwise that seems to a very good solution to explore the VHD images.

Thanks again for your help, I really do appreciate it,

Just brilliant, Tommy! I had forgotten all about WinImage
and its ability to handle multiple image types.

I just tried it, and it seems to work great.

Thank you for refreshing my memory. Sorry we couldn't
get vhdmount to work for you, but I believe you actually
found a better way.... sometimes the most simplest answer
can be right in front of our faces. I have WinImage, never even
thought about using it.

Be well, Tommy.
