Headphones don't work

I recently installed Windows Vista Home Basic. My speakers work but my
headphones don't. The headphones worked when the system was Windows XP but
now my computer doesn't recognize them. I tried to choose headphones instead
of the speakers in the sound setting but it won't let me.

Any help?

I'm using emachines AMD64 Athlon Designed for Windows XP Windows Vista
Capable.

Are they USB headphones?

No they're not. But I figured out the problem. The headphones have to be
plugged in when I start the computer or else it won't recognize them. When I
was using XP I could plug them in anytime. At least they work now...

Now that is bizarre.
