Heading ending with Automated Periods Possible?

Fellow Forum Members,
The Military Specification for a technical manual I am working on requires
that HEADINGS (Levels 2 through 6) be underlined and end with a period that
is not underlined. My manual has close to 2,500 Headings. I need to figure
out a way that will insert none underlined periods at the end of all 2,500
underlined HEADINGS (Levels 2 through 6) without creating two versions of
each HEADING styles (one version for underlined text and the other version
for none underlined text). Is there any way in WORD that inserting these
none underlined periods at the end of underlined headings can be automated?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am not sure whether you have the doc ready, or are planning to write
one, but assuming the first you can use Find/Replace (Ctrl-H). Add
underlining to your heading style. Replace ".^p" in HEADING 2 by ".^p"
(no underline). [Note: type them without the quotes -- ^p = code for
the pilcrow, that pi-like character marking the end of the paragraph.]
Repeat for the other levels. If you have headings without the period,
and need to add the period then replace "^p" by ".^p" (no underline).

Henk57 thanks for the help. I tried out your approach and it works but the
problem I'm having with it is that it creates the followng style:
Style Heading 2 + No underline

I was trying to avoid creating a whole different set of heading styles to
support the period without the underline.

I was hoping someone can tell me how to add a field at the end of all
headings (levels 2-6) that will add a period without an underline. Thanks.

Binar:
Glad I could help. The style is added because you have checked "Keep
track of formatting" in Tools/Options[Edit]. When you for instance
underline something in the body text with style "Normal" you'll see
that "Normal + underlined" or something is added. Unchecking will
solve it and also you will get rid of all other added styles, keeping
your style database clean.
