hi
I have a document with many sections, each has a different header. when i
print, the header in one section changes to a header further down the
document and the page numbers display 156 of 156 for the whole section. If i
click undo it says undo update fields. - there are no fields in the headers.
and the footers are all the same

You are reporting several different and distinct problems.

Page numbers are fields.

Page 156 of 156 - There is a bug in Word that is different in different
versions (including different SRs).
See http://www.addbalance.com/word/pagexofy.htm or
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/PageXofY.htm for information on Page
X of Y problems. You may also want to take a look at:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm. If it applies
you may also want to look at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumber0.htm.

Headers changing indicates some sort of document corruption to me. The more
sections you have in a document, the more prone to corruption it seems to
get. http://addbalance.com/usersguide/document_corruption.htm.
