HDD Filled after Error Check

I upgraded to XP Pro from ME using lessons and tactics from a 95 to 98SE
upgrade on another computer. All went well at first, then I started having
problems. First it was OE - MVP Frank S. fixed me up. Then I started to
get a HDD write error that I could ignore and everything worked - I thought.

The error became more persistent and I did the disk cleanup from properties
of C: It showed 30+G free on a 60G HD. The error continued especially
after reboot and the programmed nightly backup run of Carbon Copy to my
second 30G HDD. I tried the defragmentation TOOL and some files couldn't be
moved. I used the Error-Checking TOOL and had to reboot to start. After
reboot the Error-Checking started with both options checked. Errors found,
repaired, and back to system reboot. Everything seemed fine, the write
error wasn't coming up and Carbon Copy went through it's process without
error. Thinking all was fixed I tried to do a defragmentation from the
properties of C: again. I got an error that there wasn't enough HD space to
do the defragementation and I should clean up, witch I did, and got the same
error, but found out that I now have only 7G of free space. Then, today
after my Anti Virus software ran, I saw I had 332,000+ files checked, when
the day before I only had 192,000+ files checked.

Where are these 130,000+ files? How do I delete them to free up my HDD?
Cleanup doesn't do it? Is this because of the upgrade from ME and I have
FAT32 vice N??? file system? What can I do to get my HDD space back?

There were 5 files totaling 10K that ended in CHK. There are still over
120,000 files that are somewhere using over 25GB of Hard Drive.
What do I do next?

, I tried that, sill only 7G, what next?
Delete any .CHK files that CHKDSK may have created.
