I've a Toshiba M35XS149 Satellite used mostly for e-mail and web. The
notebooks about 3.5 years old now and has started locking up... all freezes
(system clean as ad-ware, spyware, malware programs show) cursor, Ctrl Alt
Del...no response. Must hold down power botton till system turns off then
reboot sometimes to a dead screen with just the sound of the processor fan
coming on and off , sometimes to the sound of the HDD making a somewhat loud
search sound before all will work again. Once I am in windows I must run a
browser off an external HDD or quickly get iTunes running music or radio
otherwise the system freezes in a matter of seconds. My XP SP2 runs perfect
if I have one of the above mentioned programs on. Is my HDD going bad ?
Help Please !

Determin the make of hd on your Tosh. then visit the hd manu web site, they
will have a utility which runs from a boot flopy, or cd, to test your hd

I have run Defrag and chkdsk /f also but running chkdsk while in windows
shows that I have a windows problem w/the file system and that I have free
space allocated in the volumn bitmap. Chkdsk /f will not fix this as I have
run it over...Any HELP Appreciated : ]

The hd utility is obtained from the hd manu site, eg Seagate, WD etc not
neccessarily Tosh site.

Thanks again DL. Went through this newsgroup for similar problems and Seagate
had the file but my sonic copy will not work w/ .iso files also downloaded a
recorder which should have burned the file to CD and did but this system will
not boot from it. Will keep on looking as this HD is going.
