HD not reading over 137 gigs

I just recently bought a western digital 200 Gig HD/ 8mb
cache. I have tried everything possible to get my HD to
read over 137 gigs but it won't. Here's a list of what
i've tried.

-updated the bios of my Abit KR7-A
-SP1 on Windows XP home
-tried to enable 48bitlba by adding Reg
value "EnableBigLba"
-downloaded a hotfix that said it would fix the prob
which it didn't
-updated my ATAPI.SYS file to most recent

I have tried all of these methods which claimed to be
able to fix the 137 gig barrier and none of them have. I
know that my motherboard supports it because it shows up
as 200 gigs when i boot up. But while I am in Windows it
only shows up as 137 gigs. If someone could inform me of
any other ways that could fix this problem that would be
of much help. Thank you!!!

Did you go to Western Digitals website as they address similar problems
there.

You need an ATA133 controller with 48 bit addressing. Most motherboard
controllers can only address 137 GB. I do not know why they do not state it
on the box.

Drives like these typically require an updated PCI 133
controller card that bypasses the motherboard controller.
Simply put, connect the drives to the new card and you
ought to be in business..

Thanks for the help. especially Alvin. I think i am going
to try the PCI card thing and see if that works. I
already have a Promise Ultra TX2 PCI IDE card because i
have 3 HD's. But my 60 gig is attached to the card and my
200 gig is on the main board. I'll try switching them.

Hello

Few questions to ask, this new HD 200wd is that your
primary drive or a secondary HD that you have added
to your system. Also when you foramt the drive if it is the
primary drive and you go through the installation process
of XP does it provide the total HD space.

You also said that your using the drive off an additional
PCI card, have you maybe tried just connecting the HD to your
IDE controller on the system brd and see what happens when
you try to format. Let me know how you are doing this or the
configuration and setup process that you have, email me at
my address

I tried what you suggested Alvin. My PCI IDE card reads
my 200 gig when booting up but while i am in windows i
still get only 137 gigs. I just dont think the stupid
thing wants to work for me in windows. well any other
help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks

Well, I just had the same issue with a 160. Strangely, I could
partition the full capacity with a win98 boot disk, then go into
XP and format the drive.

Very strange.
