HD not listed in or auto detected by bios

I have a new MB, CPU and am fitting a HD from my previous PC. (details
below) I was having lots of problems with slow boot up but eventually I
managed to install the WinXP Home OS.

I have identified the main problem, in that the auto detection of the HD is
not working - this is why it is taking so long to boot! However, eventually
the system does find the Master HD but very much around the houses.
When I look in the bios the HD does not appear in the boot sequence menu
(the choice is: Floppy, CD, Network) but it does appear in the config
menu??
I have checked the IDE cable, tried all options on the HD jumpers including
no jumper. Clearing the bios and starting again did not help.

Has anyone got any idea why the HD will not auto detect please?

PC Setup is:
CPU Type: AMD Duron XP, 1356 MHz (13.5 x 100)
MB: KT6V MS-7021
Power: 400w
12V @ 13A
5V @ 18A
3.3V @ 20A
5VSB @2.5A
-12V @ 0.8A
-5V @ 0.5A
System Memory: 256 MB (PC2100 DDR SDRAM)
Video Adapter: ATI RADEON VE DDR (32 MB)
3D Accelerator: ATI RV100 DDR
Disk Drive: WDC WD200BB-75AUA1 (18 GB, IDE)
OS: WINXP HOME
ENOUGH INFO?

That doesn't make a lot of sense, but I'll keep this
assessment in mind for the rest of the post.

I thought I was keeping up, but am utterly lost now... what
is "around the houses"?

We can skip this, ignore it.
Is the "config" menu identifying it properly?

Did not help do what, that is, what is your goal here?
Slow booting is not necessarily a sign of a problem, more
likley the bios isn't enabling busmastering IDE during post,
rather waiting till the OS is loaded. You might see if
that's a bios option but otherwise you just have a system
that manufacturer didn't bother to optmize, will have to
live with it like that or replace the motherboard.

Is the drive jumpered properly?
With only one drive connected to that IDE cable, the drive
likely has BOTH a Master and Single drive jumper setting.
If it's alone on the channel (cable), it should be jumpered
to Single.

If that doesn't resolve this, you might check MSI's website
for bios updates that address IDE problems and run the
Western Digital diagnostics, available from their website.

I sussed it.
The WD HD jumpers were set to Master (from the original computer setup) so
with no secondary installed it caused all my intallation problems.
So now putting two drives in with the WD as Master IBM as 2nd it work fine!
Arse or what??!!

Thanks for your help.

This is the trouble with the WWW "around the houses" is a
colloquial term for the long way round!
