I have XP MCE and I watch DVDs in the computer and on the screen.
Sometimes the HD icon that lets me open and eject from the DVD RW
disappears. The only thing I've been able to do is reinstall the entire
system. Is there a registry key or something I can alter to stop this
behavior?

Sounds a little drastic to re-install Windows and all applications
when the Eject icon is missing. I would have used the Eject button
or perhaps a straightened paper clip.

I'm not sure which icon you actually refer to. I usually eject a DVD
by right-clicking the DVD-item in "My Computer", then left-clicking
"Eject". If you drag this item to the Desktop, using your right mouse
button, then you can create a shortcut to your DVD drive that offers
the same facility. There are also a number of downloadable "eject"
programs that would respond to a double-click.

I misspoke. It's not the HD it's the DVD ROM. The icon you just spoke of
that you can click and eject dissapears. I have to hit the button to eject a
DVD ROM. Why would an icon for the DVD ROM just dissapear?
