Having to click LAN connection to connect?

For reasons I do not understand I have to click on my LAN connection
in Network Connections in order to activate it (and thus the Internet
connection). Once I click it, box appears, the connection is
activated, and everything is fine.

Any ideas on how I get the connection to activate automatically upon
startup?

What is the Ethernet cable actually connecting to?
Do you mean the LAN connection is showing up as disabled, and you have to
right-click/enable it?

The Ethernet cable connects the computer to the ADSL modem provided by
the Internet provider (Siemens SpeedStream 4100).

When I turn on the computer, nothing shows up. But if I go to the
Network Connections menu and click the LAN connection, it activates
and I can use the Internet connection.

Did it always work this way or has something changed? If something has
changed, what?

It's been working like that since I've been using this Internet
connection. Before that I used a wireless connection, so the LAN
connection didn't come into play.

I've tried updating the netword card driver, but to no avail.

I'm sorry but this doesn't make sense to me. You say that you used a
wireless connection before, which would indicate a router was involved.
Did you replace the wireless router with something? Remove the wireless
router and connect your computer directly to the DSL modem? A better
description of your situation is needed.

Normally, the necessity to click on the icon to connect to the Internet
is seen in older model DSL modems because the modem does not have the
software needed to remember your username and password. The username and
password are kept on the computer. When one adds a router to one of
those DSL modems, the router software remembers the username and
password. Newer model DSL modems do have the ability to keep the
username and password so the computer is always online and no clicking
for connectivity is required.

I have moved houses. I no longer have a router. I now connect directly
to the (new) DSL modem from my (new) broadband provider.

Interesting. I would be surprised if my modem would be considered old,
but I don't know.

Well, don't trouble your head too much with this. I might go wireless
again, or I might try pushing the Internet provider for an answer.

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Click on the Connections Tab and make sure this Radio Button checked:
(*) Always dial my default connection
And try to Set the Default, as you mentioned you moved houses and I presume
you changed ISP?.
Also double click the Network Connection and Right click your Connection and
make sure these boxes checked under General Tab:
[ ] Show icon in notification area when connected
[ ] Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity

Also you can put a shortcut in the Start Up menus here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Local user\ Start Menu\Programs\Startup
